What shapes your values?
A popular legend says that he walked about in broad daylight with a lantern in a determined but vain search for a virtuous man. This was Diogenes, a philosopher who lived in Ancient Greece 4th century BCE.

Maybe he planned to walk a long distance for a long period and knew he’d be out after dark as to why he’s carryin that lantern. Can’t help but notice Diogenes never said that the lantern was lit who he observed the man. He could have been headed for a cave as well. He also may have been planning to meet someone, this virtous man possibly, and was using that as an identification marker, like some men do with a carnation in their lapel. He also may have been legally blind and that helps him see. Is it possible that he just purchased said lantern and he’s now taking it home? So many possibilities here, can’t wait to see others guess why he has the lantern.
Primarily the Judeo-Christian Ethic.
Actually, you have the quote wrong. Diogenes was not looking for a “virtuous man” but rather for “an honest man.” People of the time were out to get things for themselves, and were greedy and dishonest as a matter of course. Walking around with a lantern in daylight was a way to chastise those around him for their lack of personal character and selfishness. Diogenes must have been quite the wag in his time.
The teachings of Jesus align with the message of Diogenes, although the message of Jesus’ lessons were more in the form of “how” as opposed to the contempt of Diogenes.
Everything. Literally. The interconnectedness of all things.
Kindness and trust shape my values and I don’t see enough of that going around as of late. I can be quite virtuous if I may say so as long as I get in a good breakfast, a hot bubble bath and have on my silk boxers.
The thing to see is ‘light, and then some’. Put another way, it is man’s personal responsibility, or giving the extra effort needed. Also, the lantern can symbolize our personal reflection of the greater light.
What shapes my values? The best choice, and not just the choice of popular consensus. I must find the best by my own extra effort, my own studies, etc. I must not only find the light, but add my own to it.
My experiences shape my values and the inner light that we all have and belong too. The light/vibration is life and it fills the Universe.
My core values were bred into me on my first baby breath.
I was conceived, I was born and now I am playing an acting part as all humans do on earth.
Our planet is a stage and we are the actors.
Values?! We don’ need no steenking values!
Oh, wait, that’s badges we don’ need. And Congress that doesn’t need the values. Never mind; I’m all mixed up here.
I love Diogenes. I want to live naked in a barrel in the middle of a city. Sigh… it was a simpler time back then.
@BarnacleBill. Dictionaries define “virtue” as “moral excellence; goodness.” It is “right action and thinking; goodness of character.” I would therefore say virtuous and honest to be similar. By the way, I don’t think I got the quote wrong.
@WasCy. We don’t need values!! I think we do! What would the world be like if everyone thought the same as you? I dread to think – its in a bad enough state as it is.
Virtue is not a passive avoidance of what is bad. It has moral power. A virtuous person has goodness. Many television programs, videos, and movies promote vice.
As a Christian I find that reading and studying the Bible helps me to try and lead a life that has values – those values make me the person I am. Also it helps me to find ways in which to please God.
My values have been and are being shaped by my being a Christian, an American, a Southerner, a father, a grandfather, a former Army officer, and a husband.
