Why are the Asgard so cute?

How did they manage to make the Asgard on Stargate so cute, while the other depictions of Grey Aliens are always so menacing?

For me, it was the sarcastic sense of humor. Real menacing aliens don’t have a sense of humor. Of course, the Michael Shanks thing didn’t hurt, either.
