NATO has started round-the-clock surveillance of the air space over Libya - Will this force Gaddafi to give up?

“The first airborne warning and control plane went on patrol at 6.30am UK time on Thursday March 10, 2011. A Nato official said each of the Boeing E-3 Sentry aircraft will remain over the Mediterranean for eight hours before being replaced by another plane. Nato has 17 E-3s and the entire fleet is registered in Luxembourg, a country without an air force.”

How will this affect the conflict?

It sounds like the beginning of a stand-off no-fly zone

Gaddafi cannot give up because Libya has no ruler…it is run by the masses. He can’t step down from a position he says he doesn’t have.

And considering the above is what he claims…if it’s what he truly believes…I’m certain that he thinks the sound of the planes are mere buzzings in his hear, and should a plane come at him his people will throw themselves in front of it out of their deep love for him.

Just like there is no spoon, apparently there is no Gaddafi.

Yes, Gaddafi seems to be out of touch with reality. But he’s got 200 fighter jets at his disposal and plenty of hired goons from other African countries lured by his money. It’s not Libyans shooting Libyan civilians. It’s people from Chad, Niger, Mali, Sudan shooting civilians. The world community has to act.

Not yet because this isn’t a no-fly-zone yet. Its just “surveillance.” I doubt any of it will even actually go over Libyan air space (at least not publicly).

No, nor will a no fly zone.

Nope.

There won’t be a no fly zone as no one wants to go in and take out the SAMS as it would probably start a war (amd who can afford one ofthose these days).

According to this Gaddafi will never give up:

“Troops loyal to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya will “fight until the last man standing” to defend his regime, his son, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, said as forces battled protesters in the capital Tripoli. Col Gaddafi’s son appeared on television to say there would be “rivers of blood” and that Libya was on the brink of a civil war that would burn its oil wealth. “Our spirits are hi.”

The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Deny_Flight in 1993 was mandated by the UN Security Council (which issued Resolution 816). Serbia had to back down.

Why shouldn’t this be possible for Libya?

@AmWiser – I don’t think it’s the people’s spirits that are “high” in this scenario. ;-)
