Have you read or heard about the 8.9 magnitude quake off the northeast coast of Japan, that struck today (Friday, March 11, 2011) at 05:46:23 UTC?

Asked by Brian1946 (32592points) March 11th, 2011

Do you know of any updates?

Has anything been said about how hard they expect the tsunami or other resultant wave action to hit the west coasts of the western hemisphere?

Has anyone heard from Hawaii Jake?

Here’s the USGS page covering the quake.

Apparently an earthquake was recorded in Hawaii not long ago, including subsequent aftershocks. I have a good friend who is in Hawaii on business right now, and the last update that I heard from her was that the sirens were going off, and hotel staff was explaining procedure for evacuating to higher ground. That’s all that I know.

Tsunami on the west coast of US would be half a foot to one foot.

We had a much smaller earthquake here on the Big Island (4.6 magnitude) caused by the volcano.

We are under a tsunami warning. We will have a tsunami, but it is impossible to predict the height.

I’m safe 2 miles from shore and on high ground.

The news footage of this event is quite incredible. They are forecasting a 3’ wave to hit Hawaii.

Devastating. :(

Good to hear from you @hawaii_jake! I have a friend who is moving to higher ground right now. Hoping all stay well.

Glad to hear you’re doing fine, @hawaii_jake! I have a friend in Japan – he’s doing all right as well. (whew!)

The latest I heard is that about 200 to 300 bodies have been found on Japan’s coast.

I spent my morning calling friends on the West Coast waking them up and telling them about the coming tsunami.

@ette_ I don’t know where you are getting your information, but the waves that hit Hawaii were up to seven feet, and it is predicted to possible be that high or higher along the coast of the US mainland.

The videos coming in now are incredible! This was a powerful and devastating event.

The last I heard, they had found 2–300 dead already in the epicenter of the earthquake. There has been nonstop coverage of the earthquake and resulting tsunami here on the West Coast, and they evacuated the coast because they thought we’d get up to 6’ waves here as well.

@marinelife Apparently my info was just for the tsunami “watch” for Washington State…it was really late/early last night and I was starting to get delirious and took that to mean what it would be for the entire west coast (mainland, not Hawaii).

I just heard that a tsunami has done considerable damage to Crescent City.
Unfortunately the only You Tube video I could find covering this is mostly talking heads and yelling kids.

I understand the toll is over a 1000 bodies now.

Anyone see the footage of the refinery exploding? I’ll link to it when I get on my laptop and not on the work computer.

I was freaking out last night. There were 6’ swells hitting the town (Seward) about 120 miles from me up here in the AK. I’m now afraid to look up what has happen since I passed out late last night.
