Is it too much to ask for a moment of silence for those in Sendai and greater Japan?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) March 11th, 2011

As we go about nice and dry safe from being swept away is it too much to take time and reflect our good luck and pray for those who’s luck were not so good? Lucky us of North America if the experts are right we won’t ever see that type of devastation because out plates slide side to side or over or under the other and not vertical because the butt head to head. When you go to bed at night will you think of those who lost their homes or lives in a wall of water or under a ton of house?

I’ve been thinking of them and praying for them all day. My daughter has friends there.

My son lives in Japan and this morning I found out that he and his family are okay. There are so many things going on over there. It is going to get worse unfortunately.

someone fixed the blank-answer trick. I was trying to give a moment of silence…

There.

I don’t know anyone in particular there… but I’m still thinking of them, hoping for them.

I have friends in Japan and my Mom is from there, so it hits close to home. I used to whine about all the terrible weather we have here——the snowstorms and such, but nothing comes close to what happened in Sendai.

I’ve been thinking about them all day. My best friend’s brother and his wife live outside of Tokyo. BFF heard from her brother about 4:00 am PST and he is safe and sound.

I will definitely bow my head in a moment of silence and send my thoughts and good wishes to all the residents of Japan and to all their friends and loved ones throughout the world and pray for their safety.

@Hypocrisy_Central The New Madrid Fault in 1811 likely caused an 8 on the richter scale, the worst earthquake ever in recorded history in the 48 contiguous states. Not likely to cause Tsunamis, because obviously it is not near an ocean, but there were reports of the Mississippi river running backyards. If it happened again the destruction would likely be devastating. My earthquake insurance living near Memphis is a fortune, and the deductable is very high. A few years ago my neighbors home owners insurance cancelled earthquake insurance, not offering it at all to their customers who live in the area anymore.

Not that I am competing with Japan, of course we should take time to think about what has happened there.

I just thought you might be interested in the fault in the middle of our country if you were not aware. This link gives some more info. See Potential for Future Quakes where it states According to some scientists, however, that is nothing compared to what an 8.0 earthquake could do to the New Madrid Region. An earthquake of that size on the New Madrid Fault would destroy 60 percent of Memphis, killing tens of thousands and causing over $50 billion dollars in property damage in the city alone [22]. And this google page shows the fault is pretty active, little temors here and there.

It isn’t too much to ask Jake. Perhaps we could all make a pact to spend a couple of minutes thinking about the people in Japan and Christchurch before we go to sleep tonight. 2011 has been a terrible year for natural disasters so far. Let’s hope this is the last.

If one 7.something happened off the Farallon Islands what would it do? If that one off Sendai could toss boats in Santa Cruz around like toys what would one double or 2 and ½ times that would do? Makes you think…....

Done. I watched live footage of the tsunami, and it was devastating.

My son is living over there and I am still worried about him. He reported that he and his family are okay but with the nuclear problem he is not out of danger. I have spent a lot of effort in behave of the people. Blessings

This happened today in Germany. Even during sports events like soccer games this afternoon.

The nuclear situation is very dramatic.
