Is it possible to apply to a college as a first-year student?

Asked by sweetsweetstephy (341points) March 11th, 2011

Even though you’ve already attended another college? Is that even a feasible option?

I would think you would need to apply as a transfer student. How come you want to apply as a first year instead, wouldn’t you lose any credits you earned at the first school?

Yes. It is up to you to apply as a new student or transfer student. If you apply as a new student, they won’t know or care for that matter.

I used to work in admissions/scheduling department at a state university.

Its dishonest, academic dishonesty, to simply lie about having not attended college in the past when the application specifically states to list all colleges attended in the past. Grounds for dismissal at most schools despite what some people say about their lack of conscientiousness. Your decision. Tell the truth and deal with the consequences or not and hope they don’t find out and that you won’t have to deal with the consequences then.

I was just wondering how the admissions people would know. I figured they would believe what you stated on your application. I didn’t consider doing it, though.

I don’t know that it’s academically dishonest necessarily. It might not make sense though. It would depend on the situation.

I’m not sure why you would need to do that unless you simply did horrible when you were at the former college. It also depends on how long it’s been since you were at this school. The best thing to do would be to call the college you want to go to and ask an admissions counselor what you can do.

I’m not sure what the procedure is where you are, but in Ontario, when applying to universities, you have to include transcripts from high school and any other postsecondary institution you’ve attended.

I went to community college when I graduated from highschool. I had no ambition to be there or anything else. Did horrible and left after a semester. 3 years later I found my passion and decided to go back to school. I didnt tell my current college that I had been in school previously. My current GPA is a 3.8 . I didnt want my lack of caring before affecting how I was looked at now, I’m a totally different student than I was then.

Yeah, you just have to apply as a first year and loose any credit transfers. But I have a hard time believing that any college would really dismiss you because you took a basket-weaving class at the community college for fun, and because it was for fun didn’t try to do well on the exams, and then didn’t want that to be a college’s first impression of you.

No. You must disclose any previous college work when you apply. If you only had a couple of courses at another school, you will still be a first-year student.
