Can anyone suggest a piano piece for me?

Asked by dxs (15160points) March 13th, 2011

I am not that good of a pianist, but I like a challenge. I want a new age style song. Not nautral new age (or whatever it’s called; like background music), but more of a David Lanz kind of contemporary. I have looked in so many places but can’t really find anything, only classical music which I am not good at playing. Please suggest anything and even if it doesn’t really fit my requirements, I can build off of it so any suggestion is helpful.

Try walking in the air by nightwish.

I could think of two. They are classical, by definition. But simple and complex at the same time. There’s Fur Elise by Beethoven. You’d know it when you hear it. Also, the Celebrated Chop Waltz aka Chopsticks. There’s way more to that song than most seem to think. Have fun and good luck!

Two that aren’t “new age” but they’re well known and fun. I grew up listening to them on the piano, among others I don’t know the names for.

Baby Elephant Walk

Flight of the Bumblebee

How about Craig Armstrong a modern Scottish composer

I would suggest anything from Peace of Our Minds by John O’Hurley and John Marston. This is one of my favorite albums of all time with amazing piano (and cello) parts.

You might remember John O’Hurley as the character J. Peterman from Seinfeld, or the 2nd Place Winner (should have been first in my book) on the first season of Dancing With the Stars or as the recent host of Match Game or the author of 2 books about family life and his dogs. He’s a handsome, talented sweetie and one heck of a piano composer.

@XOIIO Walking in the air is not by Nightwish, they just covered it. It is from the movie adaptation of The Snowman and composed by Howard Blake. It is, however, a good suggestion for a piano piece.

@DancingMind Good suggestions, but I think Flight of the Bumblebee would be a bit too difficult. I didn’t learn it until I had been paying piano for 6–8 years and I still struggled with it.

@dxs I would suggest music by Yann Tiersen, who composed the music for the French film Amélie. I also have a book called the Narada New Age piano sampler with songs by Michael Jones, David Lanz, Spencer Brewer, Richard Souther and Wayne Gratz. I’ve used it for years and really enjoy playing from it.

@ParaParaYukiko I know, I mean the nightwish version of it, which is waaay better.

I have been playing piano for about 11 years, so I am familiar with many pieces like für elise and flight of the bumblebee (not happening, sorry dangingmind :))and yanni. I am self-taught, so that is why i am not very skilled. I am good with my music and new age, but not classical. There were a few songs by yanni that i liked (nostalgia), but the thing about him is that I only like his songs on piano, not 10000 synthesizers.

That’s fine. I was thinking maybe you could start with a Flight of the Slow-Bee or something, haha

And here’s Two Part Invention in D Minor by Bach. It was a third I was trying to find earlier. It sounds really hard, and is I guess but I learned just the right hand to the “twiddledee… dudun” in the middle of the song when I was little, and my sister learned the left and right of that part in a few days slow and then practiced, so it’s definitely a do-able challenge, and it’s a beautiful piece.

I think that you should do bella’s lullaby movie version or a river flows in you. Even though some people do not like Twilight, it is still a great piece of music! (:

When I was first learning as a kid I remember Alley Cat

One I have liked for a long time (I used to use a simplified version for my beginning piano students) is Love Story by Francis Lai.
