Will Japan's earthquake have an impact on new Toyota automobiles?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) March 14th, 2011

I was thinking about buying a new Toyota next year. I now have concerns that Toyota may be out of business, because of the earthquake. Question: what’s the latest on the Toyota auto plants in Japan? Were they damaged by the earthquake? Will I have to buy a new Honda, instead?

I thought that Stateside Toyotas were manufactured domestically. I do not imagine that Toyota proper will fold.

Toyota will not go out of business thanks to the disaster. As stated by @nullo pretty much all Toyotas in the US, are made in the US (or Mexico/Canada). Some parts will probably be effected short term, but many factories and such were not too badly damaged. Plus they undoubtedly have insurance to cover the majority of their damages.

Might not be a bad time to buy stock in Toyota (or any Japanese companies for that matter)...

Thanks all. I will keep my plans for a new Toyota.

@tedd Remarkably, Toyota stock has only dropped by about US$5.00. I don’t think that they were very heavily affected by the disaster. Maybe it’ll be more noticeable in a few months.

I heard on the radio today that most of the manufacturing in Japan is in the western part.
