Socks and sandals... what's your opinion?
I have a love affair with my adidas slides, and I often wear them with no-show socks… incidentally also adidas… and they’re cut so low that they fall a full half inch below my ankle.
One of my best friends makes fun of me, playfully, about wearing socks with sandals. But I insist that with this type of slide, especially adidas for some odd reason, it’s acceptable to wear socks. My boss pokes fun at me sometimes too but then says her daughter wears them the same way and she teases her daughter the same way.
What do you think?

Looks dorky, I guess. Fortunately, I’m of an age where I no longer have to worry about looking dorky. I can indulge my preference for comfort.
ermmmm NOPE sorry socks and these sandals are not acceptable they are SANDALS!! by definition something that you would wear in the sand so dont need socks as they will get covered in sand!!!
Sorry I agree with your boss
is secretly hoping that all these responses in construction agree with my thinking!!
If you want to wear socks and sandals,by all means just do it! but not at the same time XD
You can wear whatever you want, goshdarnit! :)
A couple of kids at school would do that. My dad does that….He’ll will not wear sandals without socks, even if we’re going to a water park.
Personally, I wouldn’t do it…Just because I don’t feel comfortable wearing socks with sandals…I think its a little funny when I see others do it.
This actually reminded me of a cartoon I used to watch as a kid called “Rocket Power”...they would call people who wore socks and sandals “Shoebies” which wasn’t cool lol.
Socks with sandals is typically affiliated with old men, at least in the USA. Personally, it seems that it would be more comfortable and less smelly. IMO, most feet are not very attractive, so I don’t mind socks with sandals, particularly on men.
In my opinion, I think any shoe with an open toe is meant to be worn without socks. Heck, they even make open-toed stockings for ladies who don’t want to go bare-legged with open-toed shoes.
I absolutely agree with all of these responses… in any case that ISN’T an adidas slide sandal. If you google “socks and slides”, you’ll get a whole bunch of links asking about socks and adidas slides. I know it’s not just me.
Now, I do wear these all summer long without socks. But I try to wear them as much as possible, so when it’s not quite warm enough to do so, I’ll throw on a pair of barely-there socks.. both before and after spring/summer… ESPECIALLY with a comfy pair of sweats.
Half way to a “Full Cleveland” plaid shorts and argyle socks with sandals. Rest of outfit needs to be a paisley shirt, white belt with pattern, herring bone sports cap and bolo tie.
Sandals and socks, if worn together, means the person is “fashion challenged”.
Noooooooooooo, a thousand times, nooooooooooooo…...
And _this from a guy cowboy who recently was trained never to wear white socks with anything but sneakers… and THEN only sparingly!_
From the Urban Dictionary
A footwear combination worn only by the fashion-challenged.
If it’s hot enough for sandals, it’s too hot to wear socks.
If it’s cold enough to wear socks, it’s too cold for sandals
The issue with socks and sandals isn’t that the sock comes up over one’s ankle. Very low-cut socks are easy to find these days, for both men and women, and I strongly believe that if one is wearing capris/shorts/whatever with running shoes, little socks are a must.
The issue with sandals is that, regardless of how low-cut one’s socks are, there’s still a bunch of sock-clad toes sticking out the end. That’s where the “lame” comes in.
@sakura: None of them are adidas slides! lol
@Austinlad LOL OH NO!!!! not the white socks!!!! the single most God awful invention to cover the foot ever created! Invented by all of the devils little minions and when they’d finished they said…... lets tell guys to wear them with everything!! It will give at least half of the human population (us women of course) a giant nervous tick they can’t shake off, and an urge to vomit. Devious plan huh? LOL LOL LOL :-) huggles xx
I personally hate anything on my feet at all. Can’t bear it. I will wear slippers when, like now, a chill/cold/horrible thing is trying to kill me lol, but mostly I’m with Sandie Shaw on the subject :-) Seriously though.. if you’re happy honey, wear away, with health. Life is too short, enjoy <hugs> xx
I know but the principle still stands!! Socks and sandals (addidas “slides”) included do not require socks!!!
the ever wisdom full wikipedia LOL!!
designed for locker room – ie after sweaty sports to put on for feet to cool and wont spoil when wet after a shower!!
I agree with @AmWiser
I find it odd looking (no matter the sandal) with socks on. I wouldn’t make fun of you, but I would notice. For me, when its warm enough for sandals, I am sockless and barefoot anyway.
Do whatever makes you comfy and happy.
Well if the nazarine can pull it off….....scratch that, uberdweeby look in my humble opinion.
The Japanese have been wearing sandals long enough to have gotten it right.
@thorninmud: Oh come on now, there’s no comparison! lol
@poofandmook In that particular instance (socks with Adidas sandals) it’s ok if you’re an athlete or if you have on athletic wear. Otherwise, no socks with sandals!
My thought is “wtf mate” baddddddd lol. As someone said above its either too hot for socks or too cold for sandals, make up yee mind.
@sakura i love this picture from that site lol
actually, everything I’m wearing right now is from Modell’s lol so that counts.
I’m not a fan of that look. I’d probably make fun of you too!!
Well, I pretty much opt for comfort and functionality over fashion. However, any form of sock with sandals, IMHO, crosses the fashion no-no line.
Milo here: I love the way sandals look with my white socks. Double the pleasure. And I am clearly the arbiter of fashion in my neck of the woods.
Plus, my sandals are custom-made in Florence of soft, supple Italian leather in beautiful colors that coordinate with my satchels.
I wouldn’t care, it has no impact on me or anyone else. Wear what you want.
Wouldn’t do it myself but I won’t make fun of you as long as you aren’t wearing shorts with Crocs ‘n Socks.FYI There is no such thing as “dress Crocs”
A travesty, I tell you! :\
It’s a little dorky, but who cares! Lots of great things are dorky. People wear scarves with short sleeves all the time, which is just as illogical, but nobody really complains about that. If you like a little breeze around your toes, go for it.
socks + sandals = geek
not that anyone has to care, even so.
stupid move. Anybody doing that must stand outside in the rain/snow.
socks and sandals? ew.
socks and THOSE sandals? even grosser.
trust me you don’t need the socks.
I wish it weren’t a total fashion faux pas. When I was traveling in Europe I wore Keen sandals, and sometimes wore black no-show socks with them. I thought it looked okay, but my friends made fun of me too. The problem was, when my feet got sweaty they’d slide around. Socks took care of that.
You’d think the rules of fashion would make exceptions for people with broken arms!
I’m not a fan of how it looks on anyone older than 6, but I can see where it might be comfy.
It’s not my favorite look. Then again, I did just have a caution orange cast on my foot, with a blue fuzzy sock to make it easier on the hardwood floors. I don’t really think I have any room to pass judgment on this subject!
I don’t think it’s that big of a deal… with adidas slides. It’s very comfy and hardly visible.

When I was a teenager living in Florida, my bored friends and I counted the number of sock-sandal combos at Disney, for fun, and laughed at the wearers. So, in Florida, a thousand times no and I even saw a billboard last year making fun of socks-sandals. If a billboard is making fun of you, ahem…
In Montana, Minnesota and Wisconsin… they don’t seem to be affected. I was the only one grimacing…
Same as cocks & candles, some things just weren’t meant to go together :¬(
Gives a whole new meaning to burning members…..embers!
lol it certainly does. Could burn a hole in your pocket too.
