What food that you knew you were going to hate did you end up loving?
You know that one dish you refused to eat because it looked or smelled gross. But when you actually tried it you couldn’t get enough?
I will give my answer after a few others have commented.

Guacamole. When I first saw it I was like “ewww what the fuck is that alien looking thing?!” then I tried it and now I love it!
Anguilitas (sp?). Baby eels. Like gray pasta. Ate them in Spain, loved ‘em.
Oh there’s been a few. Avocado. Baby squid. Oysters. Winkles. (mostly seafood – I love the taste of it but a lot of it looks gross)
I still refuse to eat lutefisk. I’m not a big fish eater anyway, but I like my fish fresh caught, quickly cooked and served with some sort of coating or sauce.
But, I think I’d have to say avocado too. I’m allergic to shellfish so I can’t even contemplate thinking I might like them.
They also make this dish here that I didn’t think I’d like and it’s lamb with cabbage all boiled together in a pot for hours. It smells nasty, makes you fart like crazy, but I look forward to it every autumn now.
Halibut. I was really young at the time, and I wouldn’t eat a piece of fish to save my life (that’s probably a slight exaggeration…)
My dad came back from a fishing trip in Alaska and cooked up the halibut, and it actually smelled good. He insisted that it would be different from the fish I’d eaten in the past, because it was so fresh. I trusted him, tasted it.. and now I eat fish at least once a week. Halibut remains my favorite to this day.
Cabbage, I hated it as a kid…. Until my mother passed it off as spinach one Sunday lunch time…. “ you want to grow up like Popeye don’t you son”!! she would exclaim :-/
Being swindled for the first time by your own mother at such a tender age….. I’d be taken away from her nowwa days, if a parent did that :-/
And what was her prize you might well ask… A clean plate. :-(
Brussels sprouts
When I encountered them before as a kid, they’d had the life boiled out of them and it was as if they gave up the ghost with that awful, concentrated cabbages smell. Then one day, a friend of mine decided to buy some, halved them, covered then with olive oil, a little minced garlic and sea salt, and roasted them in a 375 degree oven. She was as wary as I, but then we each had one. Scrummy! I’m converted.
Escargot.That one suprised me.
All things green. Avocados, spinach and broccoli were the big surprises.
Century eggs. They smell like a dirty diaper.
Stinky tofu. I mean, I don’t love it, but once you get past the smell, it’s not bad.
Salmon. My only experience with it was the canned kind that Mom made into Salmon patties. I would not eat them because of the smell.
My husband and dad went deep sea fishing while we were on the Oregon coast a few years ago and caught salmon. My cousin grilled it that night and it was delicious!
@Adirondackwannabe—Like bullhead!
...I had them in garlic butter and french bread…alitlle rubbery, but good—
Sushi…the thought of raw fish did not sit well in my head. Tried it for the first time 3 years ago and LOVE it! Yum!
Sour creme. Once I finally tried it then it seemed to be good on just about everything.
Avocados, Sour cream… there are probably more things! Surprisingly, I used to LOVE whitefish, shrimp and salmon and I won’t touch those now.
