Can radiation make thyroid disease worse?
Me and my family live in California. On the news there are reports that there will be radiation from Japan heading this way tomorrow. My mom has thyroids disease and I’m worried about her getting even more sick because of that. What should I do? Could there be a possibility that this can make her thyroids disease worse?

I don’t know if radiation will affect your mother’s thyroid disease, but all the reports from physicists I’ve heard is that any radiation heading from Japan is not nearly strong enough to damage the health of anyone on the west coast of the US. I wouldn’t worry about it.
The amount of radiation that will reach the West Coast will not have any effect on people including your mother.
We are in more danger from cell phones and microwaves than from Japanese radiation.
From what I’ve gathered, the worst of the radioactive steam was 8x more than a person ought to be exposed to annually. That was on-site; it has since dispersed quite a bit. Even Californians won’t get more than a dental X-ray’s worth, at the most.
Dear lord…people discussing the Japan nuclear incident in a reasonable and well informed manner, avoiding scaremongering etc..
I’m not certain we can trust what the reports have been saying about how much radiation will make it to the west coast. Foods high in natural iodine are probably your best bet, because they fill up the receptors for iodine in your thyroid. Most of the time it helps thyroid disease, too. Disregard if she has hyperthyroidism, since it might compound problems.
I don’t think it will make her thyroid disease any worse. Radiation can cause thyroid cancer. If your mom is taking medication for her thyroid disease she should be fine
Thanks you guys. GA for everyone.
Dear lord… there won’t be any dangerous radiation from Japan hitting the West Coast of the US!
