How can the age of majority be 19 in Colorado?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19069points) March 18th, 2011

You can vote and sign contracts and do all the “adult” things in Colorado at 18 so how can the age of majority not be till your 19?

I think it is 18 @MyNewtBoobs. The age of emancipation is 19.

@SpatzieLover What’s the difference? I don’t… ::headdesk::

The age of emancipation is there for kids/single parents in need of child support. It means that the party responsible for health insurance and support must continue the support. In some cases in CO, they actually must continue until 21.

@SpatzieLovers I thought they meant the same thing. If they don’t, then what do they mean?

No, the age of majority is different from the age of emancipation legally for good reason. It has to do with how the courts are able to set up the child support agreements. Many states have the age of emancipation set at 21.

This allows the single parent to support their teen/young adult once they head off to college/complete their schooling.

@MyNewtBoobs The poster, Posted by Priscilla, is mistaken.

Edit to add: The source I have provided is the actual law, not some individuals opinion.
