How can 3/4 " Brazillian Cherry Hardwood Flooring safely butt up to linoleum?

Asked by marialisa (464points) March 19th, 2011

Does anyone know of a transition strip (or reducer) that would GRADUALLY go from ¾ inch Brazillian Cherry Hardwood to a newly installed linoleum floor? My mother has a walker and I dont want her to trip.
Thank you!

Does your mother’s walker have wheels? That would make it easier for her to hop the little speedbump. There are some strips here that are made for reducing the “step” between flooring types. You could likely find something like them at a home improvement store.

If you’re still concerned, you could lay a small rug or plastic mat over the division to make it even easier to cross.

I believe what you’re looking for is called a threshold ramp.

Oh yeah, look at that. That would definitely be better than my original suggestion if the difference in height is more considerable than I was imagining.

@Seelix‘s suggestion is probably better if it is a very small difference in height, however I have to caution against using rugs in doorways when you have someone living in the home with compromised mobility. Rugs and mats are often tripping hazards, for two reasons. One, they are easy to catch the leg of a walker or even your own foot on. Two, people (particularly the elderly) tend to want to watch their feet when using a walker, which can cause dizziness or confusion, and lead to falls, and a person may be more likely to watch their feet if they are stepping over a rug. Transitional ramps or threshold ramps can eliminate that issue entirely.

Thank you.No rugs or anything that will move. These ramps are promising…I need a ramp threshhold that will not catch on walker in any way. My mom has Alzheimers and balance problems and is at risk of falling…

Well these are designed with mobility assistance devices in mind, in most cases. You may want to try your local medical supply store, they may have the best advice for your specific situation.

Go to Home Depot and buy a saddle, or you can make one out of a piece of wood, and hand plane it so it gradually goes from thin to thick. A saddle is the piece of wood that goes under doorways. ¾ of an inch is not that much of a height – it’s not like 4 or 5 inches, which would more likely require a ramp.

@jca I need an 80 inch long reducer piece to transition from hardwood to linoleum.

so i take it that the doorway is 80 inches wide? you can buy it cut to length at HD.

@jca
The 2 living spaces as in the kitchen and the living area do not have a door and are separated by carpet and linoleum. The carpet will be replaced by ¾ inch hardwood.

ok, so i am assuming when you say it needs to be 80 inches, it’s because it’s 80 inches wide. so get a piece of wood 80 inches long and hand plane it so it graduates from thick to thin.
