Are calico cats crazier than other colored cats?

Asked by TheHornAndBeek (178points) March 20th, 2011

Okay, so I know calico is a color pattern and not a breed but from my experience they tend to be a little more, shall we say, eccentric that the others. Has anybody else found this to be true and if so do you have any examples?

Honestly, I think it just applies to female cats, in general. Female cats tend to be moodier and more fickle than male cats. I think they are also more sensitive to changes in their environment, and stress can lead to some interesting behavior in cats. That’s strictly my opinion based on a lifetime of owning and caring for cats, but I’m pretty convinced. (Almost all calico/torti cats are female… in case what I said didn’t seem to apply to the question.)

My neighbor’s calico is a little nutty.

I have had calico cats that were characters, but I wouldn’t describe them as nutty.

I have a torti point siamese and she is pretty persnickity.
Tortoiseshell cat fanciers call their attitude ‘Tortitude.’

I had a regular tri-colored calico waaay back when I was a kid and she was very sweet.

So, it’s a stalemate in my experience. :-/

There is something known as Calico attitude. When I rescued my calico Flower, the guy at the desk said I didn’t want her because “she wouldn’t come to you if you were dying”. She really does have an attitude. She can also be a sweetie, who will sometimes come when called. I think age is mellowing her out.

In my experience, yes, calico cats are DEFINITELY more idiosyncratic and “crazier” than, say, black cats or single colored cats.

If what @JmacOroni says is true about female cats typically being a bit nuttier, then it would make sense that the majority of calico cats fall into that group…they are almost always female.

In my experience, the craziest cats are male orange tabbies! I’ve never known one who was normal :)
