Does Kathie Lee Gifford have a drinking problem?
Or, perhaps if that isn’t common knowledge… is she rumored to have a drinking problem?
I watch very little television, and I never really have, so celebrity gossip isn’t a topic that I know much about. I just so happened to be watching the Today show, and she looks tanked.
I grew up with an alcoholic parent, so I can usually spot a functional alcoholic from a mile away. I know this is a silly question, but it made me curious to know if this is a common rumor or even a verified truth.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. You get to ask me any embarrassing question and I have to answer.
I need time. I can’t think of anything that isn’t inappropriate.. or gross.
she probably likes her vino at night. did you google Kathie Lee gifford drinking problem and see what came up?
@jca now I have. Apparently there was an SNL skit that portrayed her being drunk on the set, so I’m guessing I’m not the first person to get the impression.
yes, i just did too. There’s all kinds of stuff about her drinking but there are also articles where she says why they drink on the set, so maybe there’s more to it. I may check out the SNL skit later on You Tube.
I don’t watch them because I am never home at that hour, except if i am in a doctor’s office or something, but my mom said they used to appear to be adversarial but now they seem to get along.
Yeah, I read something about it being a “joke” about them drinking on the set. It wasn’t anything she said or did that made me suspect that she was drunk, it was her face. I know that look.
I never watch the show, either. I rarely turn on my TV at all, so this was just a random thing that piqued my curiosity. :)
@JmacOroni What was it you picked up from her face?
I don’t know how to explain it, exactly. Something is off about the eyes. It’s like the lights are on but no one is home? I don’t know exactly what it is. I think that if you spend enough of your life around alcoholics, you just recognize a drunk face when you see one. Even if the person is behaving perfectly naturally.
In fact, I walked into my parents’ living room recently, and someone was watching a court TV show, and the defendant was standing, silently, still. I went “woooah, she is drunk,” before she had even spoken a single word. About ¾ of the way through the episode, the judge blatantly asked the woman if she was drunk. You can just tell, I think.
Maybe that should have been my question, instead. Can you recognize a high-functioning alcoholic/addict? Or can you tell if someone is drunk simply by looking at their face?
I think it’s probably not a good idea to make assumptions about people being drunk just by looking at their faces.
I’ve been around animals all my life, and I can tell by the eyes if they’re sick or distressed. My vet and I got into a disagreement because I knew my dog was not right but he couldn’t find anything until he x-rayed him. You learn to read certain things, if it’s pets or alcoholics.
@jca well we all make snap judgments, that is only human. When you spend most of your life trying to gauge whether or not the person in front of you is about to snap and push you down a flight of stairs in a drunken rage, it is just a “skill” that develops. It grows as a defense mechanism, and although I’m sure I could be mistaken, so far it has been pretty accurate for me.
I agree with @Adirondackwannabe, I think it is just something you learn to read with experience. It is just a gut feeling.
I used to be an alcoholic but just can’t look at someone and tell if they been drinking. Smashed out of their gorg, possibly. Tipsy, no. Then you got guys like Gary Busey on Celebrity Apprentice who appears to be on something or another but isn’t. Or maybe he is, can’t tell just by watching him.
@JmacOroni: I think making that judgement about someone you know well, like your dad or your SO, is totally different than making that assumption about a stranger, (which, in essence, celebrities are, since we really only know what we see on TV). Like @12Oaks said, some people appear tipsy and they may or may not be. My grandfather had a face he would make when he started drinking but we knew him like a book, and that was a different situation than a TV personality.
I’m not sure. She is a celebrity, and the media blows out of preportion any flaw they have. I saw a TMZ “Shocking!” report that showed Angelina Jolie leaving a restaurant with a little bit of spinach caught in her teeth. They were treating it like it was a scandal!
So, I don’t care if she drinks a bit. If it is out of control, well, she probably has good reason.
