Why do pork chops come in three packs?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) March 22nd, 2011

I’m just too mellow this morning for deep thought. Why would they sell three to a pack? Got any other thoughts your wondering about? And nope, not on any drugs.

I’ve heard it is done as a tribute to the three little pigs. Have you ever tried grilling the chops? Yummie. There are recipes that will blow your house down. One recipe calls for grilling over a bed of coals layered, from top to bottom; of straw, sticks and bricks. I swear by the hair of my chinny chin chin you’ll enjoy.

I wondered the same thing last week when I had to buy three because there were no twos. On the other hand, socks should always come in threes to replace the inevitable one that always gets lost in the dryer.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@janbb Orphan socks are always a bummer.

Could it be that three pork chops is closest to one pound, and they are selling by the pound? That’s why there are ten hot dogs to a pack.

JmacOroni's avatar

Chicken breasts always seem to come in threes, also. I don’t get it.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@JmacOroni That’s right. Why is that?

Why do hot dogs come in 12s but buns come in 8s?

Edit: I just saw @12Oaks’ comment. Okay, so that’s why they’re in 10s, but why not 10 buns?

Beats me. I always cut them in half and end up with 6, anyhow. It is my way of saying “take that” poultry packagers! I don’t eat pork, so I have nothing to say to the pork chop packagers.

12Oaks's avatar

@Seelix Because rolls were sold in eights before the creation of hot dogs.

Seelix's avatar

@12Oaks – Well, excuse me, Mr. Hot Dog Knowledge Man! ;)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

So why didn’t hot dogs come in 8 packs to match the rolls?

12Oaks's avatar

Because the hot dogs are sold by the pound. They were both sold as such before the marriage between dog and bun. Dogs used to be served with no bun, and a glove was provided by the dog vendor. The gloves kept walking away, if you will, and vendors started serving in a roll to not burn your hand and to keep costs down. Eat the holder, why not?

@JmacOroni I wish I could get three chicken breasts. Where I am it’s five or nothing. For a single person that’s a lot of overkill.

JmacOroni's avatar

@mrentropy I don’t understand the odd numbers.

mowens's avatar

Because it is the other white meat.

Taciturnu's avatar

I always just figured that’s what would fit in the packing when laid out side by side.

AmWiser's avatar

@12OaksBecause the hot dogs are sold by the pound.’ Suurrre! I’m thinking, why didn’t the hot dog company make 8 hot dogs to weigh a pound.:D
@Adirondackwannabe I try to buy from the butcher so I can control the quantity;)

Don’t know where you guys are buying your meat. At Safeway, I get pork chops in twos and fours, chicken breasts in four packs. At Trader Joe’s the chicken comes in twos and threes.

However, I usually buy from a butcher, so I get exactly what I need, no overage.

12Oaks's avatar

@AmWiser Don’t believe me? Look at the hot dog primer @ hot-dog.com and it confirms my story. I’m from Chicagoland, and we know our Dogs. ;-)

AmWiser's avatar

@12Oaks Okay, so the bun company messed up…doggonit.
p.s. the link doesn’t work:(

Dutchess_III's avatar

Ewwwwwwww @lucillelucillelucille !!! (Can you imagine the dogs in the neighborhood if you went for a walk…and the dogs got out??!!)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille I guess it’s better than tying a pork chop around the neck to get the dog to play with you. On the other hand, if they bite the chop there could be some major collateral damage.

12Oaks's avatar

@Dutchess_III LOL… around here, you could major in Hot Dogology at the local college, I think. Maybe. It seems that way, anyway. LOL

My idea. One for you, two for me!
