From what I can tell, this question hasn’t been asked for about 3 years. So I’ma ask it again.
How long does it take you to fall asleep? I mean on a normal night, where you’re not extremely exhausted, drunk, high, or whatever. How long does it take from the time you lie down, get comfy, and close your eyes until you’re actually asleep?
It almost always takes me between 30 minutes and an hour to fall asleep. This seems like a long time.
I envy those people who are able to take 20-minute catnaps here and there, because there’s no way I can properly time a nap. When I lie down for a nap, I might be asleep in 10 minutes, I might fall asleep in 45 minutes.
For those of you who consistently fall asleep quickly, how do you do it?

Usually 20 minutes to 2 hours; I’m not a good “winder-down.”
I’m like you, @Seelix , it seems to take me a long time. I always read before sleep, and when I’m seriously nodding off I turn off the light. For some reason, that action seems to trigger a rush of adrenaline, which pisses me off, which triggers another adrenal reaction. Lose lose. Damn.
I’ll lay down and read anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes or so. Once book is down, glasses off, and all snuggled in, maybe five minutes. Hard to say, though, as it’s hard to see a clock with your eyes closed.
I always read in bed, too, but I’m not counting the reading time in my falling-asleep time. Once it’s lights out, I always end up tossing and turning for quite a while, even if I read until the words are swimming on the page. :(
It depends on how far I’m driving. Usually I can fall asleep within the first 50 miles or so. That only sounds like a joke.
If I don’t have anything heavy on my mind, I fall asleep within minutes of laying my head on the pillow. My sister (and others) always tease me because I would fall asleep after my last sentence and while they were still talking.
Once I turn off the light, I am usually out in less than five minutes. It’s always been that way. If I wake up in the middle of the night, though, I toss and turn for an hour or two.
Once I shut my mind off, I am out in 5 minutes.
I can lie in bed and read or watch TV for a variable length of time, but once I roll over on my right side and get in a semi-fetal position, I’m asleep within one minute. Swear to God. If I could bottle that effect, I’d be rich.
A split second. I snuggle into the right side of my boyfriends chest and establish a “leg sandwich” with our legs and I am so content and happy I drift off into dreamland almost immediately, every night.
Last night it took me 3 hours. I am insomnia’s bitch. And this has become frighteningly normal.
I f I’m really tired after a lot of physical work or after reading for hours, it usually takes me no time at all.
If however I havent read or worked or am nervous about the next day then sir help us. It’‘ll be a wonder if I get any sleep at all.
On a typical night, it takes me 5–10ish minutes. Lately, stress and discomfort have kept me up quite a bit. This past week, I was lucky to fall asleep by 3am.
5–15 minutes most of the time. Being really hot and sweaty can prolong it, as can being worried and preoccupied with something (big surprise). But most of the time, I fall asleep pretty easily in a few minutes.
I have audible books on my computer. I have been trying to listen to one for weeks. The guy’s voice just puts me to sleep. I’ve been at the same spot for so long! But then, too, I’m on a lot of meds.
I read in bed for 20 minutes, switch off the light and I am asleep within 5 minutes.
Normally around 10–20 minutes I think. But I’m not entirely certain.
Anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes. If it goes past that, I know it’s going to be a looooong night.
For me, I stay up until I am falling asleep in my recliner, then when I go to bed, it can be up to an hour before I actually fall asleep. I’ve tried taking my pills and turning off my laptop and getting everything ready in advance, then read or sew until I’m sleepy, but still standing up and going into my room wakes me up, I guess.
About five minutes apparently. As long as I don’t have stuff on my mind. Then it can be hours and I have to go and do something to distract my brain. However, if I am not focused on anything else and haven’t worked too late, five minutes and I am out like a light.
Depends if I get to the bed first, if the spuds are there I’ll sleep on the sofa, I don’t like to disturb them, about ten minutes & I’m out….. It’s a comfy sofa, that or my chair in the spare room where the telescope is……. :-/
about the same…......
30–60 minutes, on average. Faster if I’m really tired. Longer if I’m unlucky. Sometimes it takes hours. :\
One to three hours, when not drunk. I’m pretty sure I have sleeping problems, I have had a lot of white nights where I don’t sleep at all. I should probbaly see a doctor about that, but you know, Canada, free healthcare, lawlz. My sleeping problems started when I was about 15, although these days I drink so much in the evenings that I pass out before my head even hits the pillows.
But while not drinking, a few hours, yeah. A few times I get lucky and it only takes about half an hour to forty minutes. I have a much easier time with daytime naps, but that’s probably due to sleeping like shit at night. XD
I heard that a healthy person is supposed to fall asleep in seven minutes. Judging from the answers here, some of us missed something somewhere. XD
