what is taking up all the space on my hardrive?

Asked by zfishman (19points) May 23rd, 2007
I'm using 25GB for music, 4GB for applications and yet somehow 43GB are being used. I don't have an extensive iphoto library and I don't really use my computer for much other than email, music and internet. So what's up?

Mac OS can take up lots of space, especially the default installation. If you reinstall the OS without all the languages, printer drivers, etc, you can save somethng like 10 gigs (that number may be off a scosh)

Is there an online site that explains how (in English and clearly) to reinstall Mac OS w/o all the weird languages and extra printer drivers?

what would be awesome is if instead of getting info on each individual folder (if you don't know this, you can see the size of anything on Mac by selecting it then clicking apple-i), you could see a pie chart of the used space

Do you have a Mac, as the responders assume (or know) or a PC? If a PC, what version of Windows (XP?). Here's an experiment: write down the exact amount of free space (within .1 Meg) and check that once a week. M$ has a nasty way of taking over your hard drive (updates, restores, etc.)

if you run a mac and want to find out in detail, a free app called disk inventory x does a pretty good job, and it’s free.
