Can you purchase international stamps in advance?

Asked by missafantastico (685points) March 24th, 2011

A friend of mine has joined the Peace Corps and just found out that she will be placed in Indonesia. For a going away present I want to get her fancy stationary along with enough postage to send letters as often as she likes. Is there a way that I could purchase some form of international postage that would send her letters from Indonesia to the US before she actually leaves the states?

Alternatively, what would be a good going away gift for someone that is about to be out of the country for 2 years teaching English to Indonesian children?

A good gift would be a lined journal. I don’t know about the stamps.

Yes, you should have no trouble buying postage for her. Just ask a clerk at your local post office what to buy and they will assist you. Let the clerk know your friend will be in Indonesia.

As for a gift, if she is the type of person that uses stationery and writes letters as I do then a gift of pens gel writers, fine line sharpie type pens, colored Le Pens, or Flair pens, and mechanical pencils in a lap desk.

I have actually give stamps, stationery, pens and return address labels in lap desks as gifts. They are well received, and put to good use ;)

They aren’t cheap but you can purchase International Reply Coupons (IRC) at your local post office. They are in any nation that is a member of the Universal Postal Union.

Even when you have other methods set up to pay for your postage, stamps are still a versatile and convenient method of postage.
