My husband likes his Kindle but I am still unsure what to buy.
His first Kindle broke and Amazon sent him a new one.

We love our Kindle. We had the 1st one, and now have purchased the latest one….LURVE it!

I see no need for another monthly bill for an iPad.

I got a Kindle recently and I am very pleased with it. The text is very clear in all lights and I find it easier to handle than a paperback. I would recommend getting the leather cover as well.

We have both a Kindle and an iPad at our house.
I recommend the Kindle if you’re truly just looking to read—because it’s screen is engineered to prevent eye fatigue and it works even in bright sunlight without glare. Also, it is significantly less expensive ($139 USD) than an iPad.

The iPad is more like a…mini computer. If you’re looking for email/web surfing/game apps in addition to reading (tho, the Kindle also has some games)..then perhaps an iPad is worth the investment for you.

LOVE my Kindle. Read 99% of what I read these days on the Kindle.

iPad. I have a Kindle, and I hate Apple (really), but even I think iPad is better. It can simply read more formats, giving you a larger library with more choices in books and stores, it can show pictures and color, and the page-turning is more along the lines of actual page turning. Kindle won’t let you see pictures, and will screw with the formating – not only will you know if that’s a footnote or regular text, but things won’t be in the same place every time, making it very hard to use for school or work.

@SpatzieLover Why the extra bill? I don’t have an extra bill.

If all you want is a reader for text, you don’t need to spend a ton on an iPad. I have a Kobo, which is similar to a Kindle, and I love it. The iPad is definitely cool, but it’s large and expensive.

Depends on what you want to read, and where you want to read it. If you read items with unusual symbols and complex formatting (math, science, etc.), get an iPad. If you want to read documents with ordinary layout outdoors, get a Kindle or Nook.

I’d go with the Kindle, especially if you’re really just looking for an e-reader and you’re not interested in having it be able to do tons of extraneous stuff. The other two have screens just like computer screens. If you’ve ever stared at a computer screen for way too long and had your eyes start hurting, then you know that you don’t want to read books on a screen like that! Looking at a Kindle doesn’t feel any different from looking at a book.

The Nook Color can be turned into a full-on Android-based tablet fairly easily for half the price of an iPad.

The Kindle is a decent e-reader but not much else. Still, it is good at what it does.

The iPad is overpriced and overkill if all you want is an e-reader. As a tablet, it is merely overpriced, but that is to be expected from anything with an Apple logo. Well, except for the Mac Pro, but not everybody needs a dual-Xeon-powered workstation.
