What was something someone said that offended or insulted you?

Asked by nikipedia (28095points) April 18th, 2008

Have you ever been insulted to your face? What about accidentally insulted (“Sorry, I didn’t see any way you could fit into pants that small!”)? Have you insulted someone, either on purpose or accidentally? Are you only offended by direct insults, or do people’s opinions on politics, etc. offend you?

How did you handle it, as either the insulter or insultee?

My dad once asked if I was pregnant, because I’d put on weight.

Spend some time in New Jersey. People here are more blunt and insulting in casual conversation than anywhere I’ve ever been before. You have to just consider the source and grow a thick skin to survive here. I don’t think the even realize how rude they are.

i was at the skatepark the other day and this kid that was about eight or nine started talking to me. He says, “Your a teenager right?” Then i answered , “No im 26.” He looked at me funny then said, “Hmm you sure are short for your age.” I was so offended. It didnt really offend me just funny. Then he asked me if id been watching hannah montana lately.

Actually was half offended when I recently chatted with an ex employee who said he wished I was his older sister….....he tried to recover by adding “not that you’re old…”
Sometimes people just need to know when to stop digging.

all the time, while working in retail!! Customers can be pure evil. Ive been called a “dumb bitch”, have been threatened yelled at.. Etc
But I have gotten wayyyy more tolerant of the insults, and became a lot stronger, too. So I guess I can look at my encounters in a good-learning-experience kinda way!? :).

I definitely second the above comment about retail—I volunteer in a fair-trade store, so I’m shielded from a lot of the spite one can normally get, but people still seem to think that you’re some sort of servant and they can say whatever they want to you! The main instance I recall at the moment was a phone call I took: the woman began to explain her problem, and when she paused for a moment, I said “ok”, as one does to show one is following, and her response? “Um, can I talk?” It was as if she didn’t understand the basic rules of how humans tend to communicate… Oh well. I got over it, it just stays a memory, as insults usually do for me.

While explaining some health issues of a family member of his I offered to help someone I knew, not a good friend but a friend nonetheless. Seeing as I had been in an identical situation I offered my sympathy and support and began to explain when he cut me off.

He looked at me and said, “You wouldn’t understand. You’re just…you. You’re just not that smart.” With disdain.

I stood up, walked out and left him there to be alone with his misery.

Funnily enough. I overheard him once talking about an IQ test he’d taken, the same one I had in the past. Trust me, he’s not that smart.
