Is it racist to sympathize with the white coach, and condemn the black players?

Asked by josie (30934points) March 25th, 2011

The Ohio State football Buckeyes are a local obsession in Columbus Ohio.

The football coach (Jim Tressel) has gotten himself into trouble.

Last year, he got a heads up that five of his players were selling or trading (for tattoos) some of their trinkets, trophies and autographs to a local tattoo artist who is also under investigation for drug dealing.

He did not tell the AD, or the University NCAA compliance office.

When the story broke, he was fined and he and the players suspended for several games. The unfortunate tale is not over, and I think he will probably lose his job. The players will probably go the NFL and make a lot of money.

At a recent party with Buckeye faithful friends, I said they ought to throw the players off the team and out of school.

The players are black. The hostess said my opinion was racist.

It isn’t of course. I said what I said, not because they are black but because they are either dishonest, or stupid, or both. They are braced constantly about the NCAA rules. There is no mystery about the NCAA’s rules at OSU.

But I was curious what the members of the collective would say about my opinion.

It is not racist just to say that players who broke the rules should be punished.

But the coach turning a blind eye was just as culpable. In fact, more so, because the coach sets the tone for the team.

Like I said, he will probably be gone before it is over.

The hostess is wrong.and should be slapped XD

Tellingly, there were NO ham sandwiches at the party.

Sounds like your hostess would prefer to turn a blind eye to the player’s wrong doings just because they’re black. This proves she’s not racist, see.

@josie No,but apparently she was serving chips and dipshit ;)

Your hostess friend needs a little dose of reality as white players would never get caught doing that as they don’t have the bling to sell or trade that black players have. Sheesh! ;)

Your opinion does not appear to be racist..
Imo a school would not let go of 5 palyers from their team.. Especially if
they’re of major value on the field..

@saintDrew Four starters, one bench.
The coach’s critics claim that this motivated him to keep it quiet.
He says he was trying to protect the players. He has a reputation for being a player’s coach and of being an effective mentor, especially for the ones who need it.

On the other hand, all coaches like to win, especially at OSU.

So who knows?

It’d only be racist if you sided with the coach because he’s white, or if you sided against the players because they’re black. Because of their behaviour and the situation, your opinion is not racist. The ethnicities of those involved are circumstantial.

Depends on the person who is siding with them I guess. Why would it be racist to side with the coaches or the players? Some may have racist reasons but that certainly doesn’t make one a racist for siding with them. That said I think the players are getting quite arrogant. They are not even pros yet and they think they are stars. They have yet to prove themselves in the pros and if they don’t make it in the pros then they will be forgotten. Some of these big college names become busts in the NFL. If they are expected to be NFL star players then they are not forgotten but remembered only as busts.

No, it’s perfectly fine to sympathize with a coach and condemn players despite races of all involved. It’s also perfectly fine to sympathize with the players and condemn the coach despite the races of all involved. Or any mix you could think of for all involved.

Your comment wasn’t racist. That the bad behaving players might be mostly black doesn’t equal slant or malice on your part because you comment on their bad behavior as sportsmen. Your hostess is a dodo.

The hostess of this party sounds like she is trying to prove that she isn’t racist rather than prove that you are. What a doofnut!

In my opinion, they all did worng, coach and players, so they should all be punished for it. I don’t know how they should be punished but I certainly don’t think that the coach should lose his job and the players go on to continue playing and make a wad of cash from it. Surely these guys are old enough to make their own decisions and know the rules well enough to decide whether they are willing to follow them or not.

This has nothing to do with the skin colours involved. I would say the same if the coach and players had the same skin colour. I am so bored of people, such as yourself in this instance, being accused of racism like this. Makes me wonder if some people even know what racism really means.
