What constitutes a thought?
The other day I saw a commercial that stated that humans have, on average, 3000 thoughts a day. At first I laughed, but then it made me wonder…What exactly constitutes a thought? What does a thought consist of? And can you quantitatively measure thinking?

My first thought was that your question was way out there. I then read your question over and over and finally came to this conclusion:
A thought has to be generated or suggested. Example: I saw a Yellow Cab and a thought hit my brain…..“I wonder what their cabs would look like, if the were all painted red, instead of yellow. Would Yellow Cabs then be called Red Cabs?”.
@john65pennington your response just made me think… “one time I saw a car that had a sign on it that said “Yellow Taxi Service”. It was a silver car.”
Could you look at it as conciousness being one long drawn out thought from when you wake up until you go to sleep. Although we are still thinking when we are asleep when we dream. I wonder how they measured these 3000 thoughts.
The thought is the perception of existence/non existence…
Where there is the correct alignment of the thought things are seen clearly.. otherwise confusion remains.
Seeking out and adhering to Truth is the process of correcting the alignment.
And collectively all thoughts is you because you are what you think.
If you have ever tried to meditate, which is a process designed to empty the mind of thought, you will know just how difficult this is.
3000 thoughts a day? Ridiculous piece of guesswork. Try 3000/hour…That’s 50 a minute.
Sit in a quiet spot. Shut your eyes. Concentrate on your breathing. Now, stop thinking. It’s not so easy.
@gailcalled That also happens when I try to go to sleep.
@gailcalled I agree! 3000 seems really low to me perhaps because I’m terrible at meditating. My mind runs at high speeds so meditating is like trying to stop a speeding car with your hand. I know, I need more practise
I wish I knew some of those people. I often seem to be surrounded by people with no more than a dozen thoughts a day. And it seems like they’ve already thought them all before I get to interact with them.
I’m also thinking 3000 is ridiculously low. Isn’t thinking continual? Thus making 5–10 thoughts, observations at a time? This is why some of us need sleeping pills.
Whatever is happening around you…you tend to think about it and the different possible outcomes of the situation. Some people, who worry a lot,may have more “thoughts” than an easygoing personwho doesn’t tend to think about his or her surroundings as much.
Thoughts are just our brains conjuring up different scenarios based on a particular situation or thing.
