"Near east" versus "mediterranean"?

Are these terms the same? if not, how are they different? specifically, when describing food.

academic distinction having to do with certain time periods.

the mediterranean includes all of mediterranean europe incl. italy, greece, spain, portugal, while the near-east refers mostly to the arab world.

the middle east, just to confuse the issue, is a political invention.

Also delicious French food as well as Moroccan, Egyptian, Algerian, Israeli, Turkish, Tunisian... a lot of similar crops grown (olives) and fthe same fish caught.
