I was told that when they breakdown it is hard to get replacement parts.

My fiance had an emachine for a few years. If you know what you’re doing with computers, it’s not hard to find parts. I know that his major problem was that the one he had (this was quite a few years ago) used DDR RAM, and when he wanted to upgrade, SD had pretty much won the battle. That was his major reason for getting rid of the emachine, and he decided to build his own after that.
If you’re not all that computer-savvy, you might want to consider getting a computer from a retailer that offers a service plan.
I had an e-machines. The computer worked fin and stuff. But I never got the rebate as promised, and when it came down to customer service there was none. After a while they refused offer help, saying my warranty expired from the date purchased. Funny? I thought. How did they know when I bought the thing if, as they claim, they never got the receipt from purchase to give me the rebate.
Yeah. Emachines run great. Till something goes wrong. And you open it, and void the warranty.
Emachine computers have improved a lot since they first came out. If you are not terribly computer-savvy and you don’t intend to do much beyond daily internet/email/word processing use, an Emachine computer will probably work fine for you. That said, you get what you pay for. If you have anything big (say, the motherboard) fail outside of manufacturer’s warranty, you’ll probably have to pay as much as the computer’s original cost to have it replaced. Not to mention that premade cases are sometimes difficult to fit replacement parts into if they’re not the same model as the original part. If you’re looking for a bargain desktop, I would take @Seelix‘s suggestion and make sure to get the service plan on it. That way, the retailer would absorb the cost of hardware repairs should anything fail.
