What to do about back pain!

My lower back has been killing me. Mostly the right half, right next to my tail bone. I have not done anything out of the ordinary to strain it or hurt it. It has been sore over 4 days now, and i have been consistently stretching it and taking Advil. I sat out of track practice today because of the pain. Its mostly spasms, when I’m sitting or standing up, a shooting pain goes right through my lower back. Any further suggestions on how to cure my back!?

If it’s your lower back by your tail bone (coccyx) then you might have an inflammed sacrum (SI joint) or you might have sciatica. I had an inflammed sacrum in December and after a couple of days, the pain got worse and worse (because I have a desk job, so I sit down, thus bothering the sacrum which is a joint inside your pelvis). So I left work one day when I was in tremendous pain and I went to the ER. The ER doc diagnosed it as an inflammed sacrum, and was able to give me shots of steroids (to alleviate the inflammation) and a powerful pain killer to make me feel better. It worked. I stayed in bed for 4 days and iced it as often as possible. I also took Tylenol.
I then went to acupuncture the next week, and my acupuncturist did some stuff for that.
And it all worked. The key for me was icing and staying out of my desk chair (staying in bed).
I feel for you! I finally have my back feeling better after hurting it during triathlon training. It’s going to take time to get it back to normal.
I suggest:
1. Visit a chiropractor who specializes in A.R.T. (Active release technique). All of us athletes (where I trained) swear by it.
2. When it’s bad – ice. Then switch to heat (like next day)
3. Take fish oil vitamins to act as an noninflammatory.
4. Drink water – back spasms are partially due to dehydration. My back spasms got better when I am better hydrated.
5. Use a back support when on the couch or driving to make posture better.
If you are a girl, as I assume, it my back always hurts when I get my period. Freaky, i know, but apparently it has something to do with how the pelvis tips back and puts pressure on your lower back. I don’t know if your are even in that age range, but if you are, that might be the problem considaring it happened without an apparant cause. Just take some tylenol or something like it.
You are now talking to the back expert. I have had four back surgeries. Back muscle spasms are no fun. Are you a tall person? If so, sorry to say, that once your back begins to bother you, your life will be filled with back problems. Its just mother nature at her finest.
For instant relief, lay on your back on the floor and place your legs in a chair. This will take all the strain off your back muscles.
I have taken a bathtub full of aspirin, Advil and so on. None of this works. Generally, after two days of bed rest and laying on your back in bed, gently grab both knees with your hands. Pull your knees toward your chest and gently rock to the left and to the right five times. You should be able to feel the muscle burning in your back. Next, gently raise and lower your knees to your chest for 30 repititions. Next, take two Advil and soak in a hot tub of water for 20 minutes.
If you can do this procedure twice a day, your back will slowly return to normal.
Remember, muscles go in sympathy with each other. Sometimes it just take time for everything to settle back down in your back.
