What's the best way to keep your shoes smelling fresh?

Asked by mcsnazzy (434points) March 30th, 2011

At school, I wear these stuffy shoes for 6 hours straight and when I put them in my locker, they have an odour. Then the locker starts to smell. How should I prevent this?

Don’t wear the same pair of shoes every day. They need to air for a couple of days before you wear them again. Have a couple of pairs of shoes and rotate them.

Baking soda. Sprinkle some in when you put them away. Then dump it before you put them on.

Well, there are those shoe-odor-ball things that you can put in them…I personally HATE the smell of them, but here‘s a link anyway

I second the baking soda. It really does work.

I spray my shoes/boots with Febreeze or Lysol once in awhile.

I try putting boric powder in my shoes. The powder kills the germs that causes the fungus which causes the smell.

The best way to keep them smelling fresh is to keep them dry or allow them to dry after wearings.

Now, if your shoes already have an odor, then you probably have bacteria growth in them.

The best way to combat the bacteria is to freeze your shoes overnight (put them in a baggie/brown bag, then freeze them). After freezing them, the bacteria should be dead. So you can stuff them with newspapers between wearings or sprinkle in baking soda. (Here is Wis, we just set our shoes outside for the night;)

If your shoes still have an odor after all of this, you may want to use an odor removing spray (see the pet section of your grocer or an enzyme spray at your pet store).

The best advice would be to own two pairs of shoes for school. That way you can alternate days and allow the shoes to dry out thoroughly.

Have the “Old Spice” guy wear them.

@SpatzieLover: Have you done the freezing with leather shoes?

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Neizvestnaya Yes! My son tends to get his wet. I freeze them or they smell up the place. It’s really best if you can get them as dry as possible first.

@SpatzieLover: This is great news, I might be able to save a pair Mr.‘s not-inexpensive dress shoes :) Thanks

@Neizvestnaya anytime :) I hope it works <fingers crossed>

Baking soda does work. You can also try putting dryer sheets in them when you’re not wearing them.

I agree dont wear the shoes everyday and wear socks with them!

Keep your feet out of ‘em…

Oh.. Black tea leaves are a good deodoriser too, if the baking soda isn’t enough. Black tea leaves have tannins and the bacteria and fungus making the smells don’t like tannins. Having a foot soak in cooled strong black tea can help foot odour too.

I’m a serious walker, so my shoes used to have a bit of a smell when I lived in a warmer climate. I used (and still have two jars of the stuff) Gran’s Remedy. It’s very basic stuff and if you can get your hands on some basic ingredients you can make it yourself.

Stuff dryer sheets in them before storing in your locker.
Use one or many and not that expensive.
