Do lips have pores?

Asked by tan235 (877points) March 31st, 2011

The reason i ask is because I have just noticed a tiny white bump on my bottom lip just under the skin, I can squeeze it and it hurts, so I’m thinking maybe it’s a clogged pore – after reading online.
Does anyone know what this might be, it’s about the size of pin head.

Thanks

I’ve got them before. I reckon they are ‘pimples’ – it’s probably from the types of foods you are eating. I found when I was a kid & even into my 20’s. I used to get them when I ate more junk food, including package foods too.

Two weeks ago I got one of my ‘tell-tale’ pimples right in the edge of my lip. (I tried a new lip balm and 99% of the time, I get one of these stupid pimples because they block up a pore. My skin is so sensitive.)

The thing with soreness on or around your lips is you have more nerve endings around this area, making these types of pimples hurt more. :o(

It can be some sort of blocked lymphatic or oil duct. If it doesn’t look like it is going to surface, use a warm compress on it a few times a day and gently massage it. How long have you had it?

If it gets worse, see a doctor. You may need antibiotics.

From what I understand, all parts of the skin has pores. While the majority of our skin’s pores lead to sweat glands, the lips (and a few other bits) do not. Their pores are the openings to ducts for glands that produce lubricants.

There is a condition called Fordyce spots that can occur on the lips (and those other areas) from blockage of the lubrication in the duct. It is harmless, meaning non-contagious. From all that I’ve read, the only way they can be addressed is through professional treatment, like a chemical peel. Even then, they have a tendency to return.

yeah this is weird as it’s just one, I can feel it with my tongue and see it, it does look like an oil gland…. but would you get just one?
I was eating spicy crackers with Hommous – and i’m kinda allergic to garlic, it’s a bit weird…. I want to prick it with a needle… but not sure that’s a good idea!
Has anyone ever had one, with these Fordyce spots can you feel them?

Yes, I’ve had them for years on my upper lip. Occasionally, they seem to swell a bit, but otherwise, they rarely change. Wait…I just looked, and it appears that they have faded, which is what I’ve heard they would do.

Whatever it is, resist the temptation to stick it with a sharp object. That would likely do more harm than good.

Thanks @Pied_Pfeffer ... so you’ve had just little white dots?
so good to know others have them as well….

Yes, just little pinkish-white bumps. There are other descriptions of them being yellowish.
