What to do for a slightly pulled quad?

Asked by kb12345 (435points) March 31st, 2011

Yesterday I slightly pulled my left upper quad sprinting. It feels very tight and when I walk it is pretty sore. What can I do to shorten this and have a quick heal? I have a track meet tuesday so is there anything I can do so I can still train this weekend? Thank you

Ice it and do gentle stretching and massage but not all at the same time!

Be sure not to ice and stretch at the same time. Actually, I would not even try to stretch it for a day or two. I recommend heat, not extreme heat, but keeping your leg protected from cold, and protecting it from further injury. You can also take ibuprofen for 24–48 hours to reduce inflammation. 2 to 3 (400–600mg) every 6–8 hours or so. Just be sure not to take the reduction in pain while medicated as a false sign you are healed and injure yourself more. Also, take ibuprofen with some food and a glass of water.

Rest, ice, compression, elevation.
