If I develop cellulitis or a staph infection in my foot, will it necessarily be accompanied by a fever?

Asked by erikaziger (345points) March 31st, 2011

I am worried about a cut I got on my foot at a nail salon yesterday. If it starts to get all red and swollen I will know that it is infected. If it is staph or cellulitis I will have a fever, right? Can you have either of these infections without a fever? I am going out of town tomorrow and would rather not run to the doctor just because I am paranoid.

You might not develop a fever, it just depends on how your body reacts to the infection and how far the infection spreads. If it is red, swollen, and has any kind of drainage, you should have it checked to see if it is, in fact, a staph infection.

Just keep your cuticle clean. If it had happened to me, I would have gone home, rubbed it with alcohol, put a ointment on it and wrapped it in a bandage.

If it gets hot or swollen you can go to the doctor. Otherwise, you could keep cleaning it. And keep it dry during the day.

You may not get a fever. I got a staph infection in the fall and it was not accompanied by a fever.

What do you mean by drainage? Right now it is, of course, red and slightly swollen, but other than that it looks like just a cut. Are you saying I should look out for puss? Do staph infections always include puss?

eh, just burn it off, that’s what I did to a MRSA infection that started developing on my right arm. I’m fine now and the infection is gone.

(of course the doc thought it was “unethical” but hell, it worked)

The drainage could be pus (which definitely is a sign of infection, though not necessarily a staph infection), but you could also have clear or bloody drainage as well. Clear and bloody drainage don’t necessarily mean infection, but if you have a lot of it, you may want to get a doctor to check it to be sure nothing else is going on.

You might not get a fever until it has spread. And you don’t want that to happen!
