What cell phone service should I switch to from AT&T (in NYC)?

My cell phone service, through AT&T, is terrible. (I’m in Manhattan, but it was also like this in upstate New York.) Any given conversation is likely to get cut off, and the reception in my office is really bad. (My office is on the 2nd floor of a skyscraper.) Sometimes the person I’m calling can’t hear me even though I can hear them.
I have the impression Verizon gives the best service, but I would probably want to get their unlimited plan, which would be $90 a month (as opposed to the $55 I’m paying now). Does anyone use anything that’s more affordable but with decent service in Manhattan?

I don’t live in NY but visit a lot on business. ATT service was always horrible; Verizon has always been super reliable all over Manhattan, from Battery Park to the Cloisters, and all the way to JFK. In my opinion it’s worth the extra cost.
I concur. Seeing all of my AT&T friends lose reception when/where i still have at least 2 bars and watching them drop calls more than a cheap hooker drops her panties makes me glad I pay a bit more for Verizon. Saving money can cost you ;)
OK, Verizon is clearly great, but how about Sprint?
I am not sure about their coverage of Manhattan, but I think this might help.
UPDATE: I just got an iPhone.
Let us know about the reception on it. I know that the iPhones (not just the 4, but all generations) used to have serious issues even with the same carrier as other phones and all, and I am curious to see if Apple fixed that issue yet.
Yeah, I got a Verizon one, but I’m not assuming the phone component is as good as a normal Verizon cell phone.
I hasten to add that I can’t imagine it being as bad as the AT&T cell phone that I am now happily casting aside.
Ive visited NY a whole bunch of times and I have Metro PCS, I’m not sure if its out there yet though and its only 45–60 dollars a month.
