How do you store your quilts and blankets long-term so they are not damaged by age?

Asked by jca (36062points) April 1st, 2011

I have quilts, afghans and blankets in a cedar chest. I recently heard that cedar, although it is great for repelling bugs, is highly acidic and will stain fabrics that are stored in there long term. I also learned you should not wrap the fabrics in plastic.

So then what to do? How do you store your blankets and other fabrics long term so that they’ll last for decades to come?

you could try lining your chest with acid-free paper. If you are storing fabrics long term, I would definately check on the fabric at least twice a year.

Before putting it in the box make sure that it is clean, completely dry, and that you are keeping the box in a clean, cool, dry environment away from mice.

I’m going to take them out and wash them tomorrow.

I have many antique quilts and I either fold them on a very large wooden quilt rack (I refold frequently so that there is no permanent crease) or hang them on walls that do not get direct sunlight.

I do keep woolen blankets in a cedar chest during the warm months.

Milo has solved the mouse problem around here so that is no longer an issue.

My mother-in-law wrapped her quilts in blue cotton cloth and secured the cloth with safety pins. I don’t know why it had to be blue, but I’ve left them as she wished. Unfortunately, she died some 25 years ago, bless her soul.

I lay a sheet on top and fold it up so the sheet is on the outside.
