I just changed my cat's name. Do you think she'll mind?

Asked by Ladymia69 (6884points) April 4th, 2011

Her name was Sweetness, but we’ve taken to calling her Tina (as in Tina Turner) because she gets smacked by the other cats, and has all these visible scars on her little schnozz. Not PC, I know, but it was impromptu, and that made it funny. I have read that cats are really only interested (or maybe can only hear most audibly) hard sounds, such as “k” and “t”, or sounds with high frequency, like “s”. therefore, they supposedly respond to them better.

So adding a question onto my question, do your kitties respond to their names well? Do they come when called and such?

Nope. I had a hamster once. I changed it’s name over 37 times and it never seemed to mind!

My cat responds more to “here kitty, kitty” than anything else. Then of course when I want in the door and she comes to greet me I tend to yell “KITTY!” like Boo in Monsters, Inc. Lol! She comes when we call her, but I think its more the tone of voice that she’s responding to than anything we’re saying. Except for “no” in the various tones of voice and volumens that she seems to get.

Each of my cats have at least 4 names, one for each of their different personas.

I doubt your cat will mind.
My cats definitely know their names, and the absurd nicknames that I give them.

Cats don’t care. Food and warmth are the only things they have an opinion about, and that opinion is “gimme!”
Just don’t call her Meowington, Meowmeow, Lady Von Pointyears or miss Lickettygibbet. They hate that.

@bob_ loves to wear “Canadian tuxedos”

Oh, wait. What? No, she won’t mind. :)

If she starts barking yes, otherwise it’s fine. I do have this nagging feeling though that maybe she might try to get her legs insured or start meowing to the tune of Whats Love Got To Do With It…hmmm…

I had a cat that went through quite a few names.

Her original owner named her Heaven (her sister was Angel)
We changed their names to Big Bit and Little Bit as a stopgap before going to Dog (for her yipping and grooming) and Squirrel.
Dog never responded to Dog though, so we went through a few renamings and nicknames. At various times, her name was Sparkles, E-bay, Are-you-defective?, Trout, and Brittany (she was a little ditzy) before she found her final name and the one that stuck; Slagathor.

So long as she got food and affection, she didn’t care… or notice. I don’t think your cat will either.

An animal that responds by running to you when you use a can opener, might be less responsive to the new name. . . . until he/she puts the new name and the can opener sound together and realizes they mean the same thing.

My cats don’t answer to their names, but will answer to just about anything said in that “here, kitty-kitty” voice. If your cat really does respond to its name, I wouldn’t change it. If not, I’m sure she won’t mind.

My cat’s know their names too, even the colourful ones when they’re tearing the house up! :-/
I doubt your cat will mind the change just so long as you still call her name with affection when you call her,,,,,,, I don’t mean like Tiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnaaaaaa puss, puss, puss, puss ickle pluppy ploppy poo! :-/
as some may do but sharp, TINA should do it & give her a treat when she does respond..
:-/ & a good fuss……

No. All she will care about is the tone in your voise. My husband changes my name constantly, calls me all sorts of nicknames. He’ll call me the same thing for months, and then all of a sudden come up with something new and think himself brilliant. Whenever he calls out for me, pretty much no matter what he says, I know he is calling for me. The show Everybody Loves Raymond had an episode about just tis thing. If people go along with new names, definitely a cat can. The cat just cares that you take care of it, and knows you like being with her.

Long as her bowl still gets filled with food and water and you treat her like the most important creature on the planet, which she is of course, no, of course not.

If she does kick up a fuss just yell tennis racket…... that’ll put a stop to any of her nonsense.
