Can you help me find this childhood book please?

Asked by MissAusten (16157points) April 5th, 2011

I’m going to a baby shower where each guest has been asked to bring their favorite childhood book. I have tried and tried to find my favorite picture book without being able to remember the title and am having no luck at all. Now I’m hoping someone here can help!

I don’t know when the book was originally written, but I was a little kid in the late seventies. The book was about a cat who (I think) was named CatCat. His family also had a dog and a fish. CatCat got into trouble and felt unloved, so ran away or something. When he came home, everyone was happy to see him. I think CatCat belonged to the little girl of the family. This is what I remember of the story, and it might not even be accurate.

If this rings any bells, or anyone has an idea where I might be able to find the title of this book, I’d really appreciate the help! Thanks!

I don’t suppose it’s at all possible his name was Puppycat? It kind of sounds familiar, and my mom used to read me this story that started off: “Puppycat wasn’t a puppy, and Puppycat wasn’t a cat. Puppycat was a puppycat.”

If I recall correctly, he did feel unloved or unwanted or something, and left. The family searched for him and the little girl cried, then Puppycat finally returned.

I’m only coming up with “The cat who stamped his feet”—about a cat who runs off and hides in the attic when there’s a new baby in the family and the cat feels neglected.

Edit: found a review of it.. The cat’s name is Clancy, and he gets upset when the family gets a new kitten, not has a baby. Still not the book you’re looking for. sigh.

Yeah, not quite right, but thanks for looking! Not being able to find it is driving me crazy, and the more I try the more annoyed and obsessed I get!

Trust me, I understand! There’s a short story I’ve been looking for for YEARS.

@SpatzieLover That sounds like a winner! The name of the book is simply Cat-Cat. I did a search on it to see what else I could find, and the only descriptions I’m coming up with says, “Cat-Cat runs away when the family moves her into the garage”, “Cat-Cat lives on C Street”, and “Cat-Cat moves out and Butchdog moves in”.

@MissAusten Glad I could be of service! I wish we had a children’s book question everyday ;)

Out of curiosity, how did you find it? Did you go straight to eBay, or did some other search lead you there?

I went to Amazon and typed in CatCat. There, I found the author, so I could search ebay. Usually I have to employ more difficult to use search engines. I just got lucky this time as you had the name of the character correct.

Wow, that’s crazy! I tried Amazon too, but somehow missed that. I think I was too focused on looking at the pictures instead of the author. My search probably wasn’t quite the same, since no matter what I tried I got tens of thousands of books about cats. I’m so glad to have found it though! I got it through one of the eBay links and can’t wait for it to arrive!

@MissAusten I have a knack for searching. I’m nearly completely computer/electronic illiterate, but searching…especially for books, curricula, and other oddities is a specialty of mine :)

So glad you were able to order one. I’m sure the mom-to-be will be thrilled!
