Where can I find information on life debts?

Asked by give_seek (1459points) April 9th, 2011

I’ve heard that some ancient cultures had a tradition whereby if your life was saved by someone, you owed that person a debt for life—or until an event occured in which you were able to repay that debt by saving his/her life.

Is this true? If so, to what cultures did this apply, and how can I find out more about this topic?

Thanks!

This seems to be found more in fictional universes than in the real world.

Sometimes it’s the other way around. If you save someone, then you are in their debt for the rest of your life. If you hadn’t saved them, they wouldn’t be around. But since you did, it is now your job to make sure they stay alive and do what they should do.

@marinelife Great minds . . . my journey on this topic started with Wikipedia. Here’s hoping there’s even more information out there somewhere . . .

@wundayatta I like the twist. Thanks for that information.
