Would you give me some movie recommendations of movies I might not have heard of?

Asked by optimisticpessimist (3909points) April 9th, 2011

I do not like sad movies which make me cry or slap stick type humor.

Some of my favorites are: Equilibrium, Boondock Saints, Troy, Arthur (about Camelot not the new movie), Batman Begins, The Matrix, Serenity, Hero, and 300. This is just to give you an idea of what I usually like to watch.

Thank you, and if they are available on Netflix, I double thank you.

So it sounds like you enjoy epic-style adventure. Have you tried Hellboy?

optimisticpessimist's avatar

@peridot Yes, thank you and all of the Lord of the Rings as well.

@peridot I second Hellboy. The comic isn’t too bad either! :D

You might like Watchmen, but I recommend reading the comic first.

Star Wars and Indiana Jones are the go-to’s for big ol’ action flicks. If not, try V for Vendetta, Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, and 3:10 to Yuma.

I am not much into mainstream film, but i could give you some good foreign or lesser-known film suggestions. Also, here is a search engine that will help you find movies that are similar to movies that you like. You can tune the results to get just about anything you’re looking for. It’s fun, try it!

Glengarry Glenn Ross.

@ladymia69 The link was great. Thank you. Lesser known recommendations would be great. I do not mind foreign as long as it is not subtitled.

@ragingloli Never heard of that. I will have to try it. Thank you.

@Joker94 Thank you. Some I have seen, some I have not.

LA Confidential, Beowulf, The Right Stuff, Lawrence Of Arabia

Your selections are kind of all over the map, so it’s hard to tell

I bet you would like “Dark City” a lot.

The Insider
Léon
Summer Wars (make sure that you get the subbed version. English dubs suck ass)

If you haven’t seen it watch The Girl in the Cafe, it is wonderful. I would also suggest opening up and watching some bollywood films, there are many with subtitles but they are really great films.

optimisticpessimist's avatar

@janbb Have seen two of them, but will try Inception.
@filmfann Have seen 3 of them, but will have to check out LA Confidential. I don’t think they are really all over the place. A lot of hero stuff in there, just the scenery changes.
@Qingu Haven’t seen that one. Will give it a shot.
@ragingloli Just looked up Leon, I do like that movie. Thanks for the other tips.
@Cruiser Saw that many, many years ago, but I am going to watch it again now.
@creative1 Thanks for the link. It does sound interesting. I usually don’t do subtitles because I am usually crocheting while I ‘watch’ movies or tv, but when I just want to watch, I will give them a shot.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

There is Boondock Saints II as well, it’s just as good I think.

Some more ’‘obscure’’ ones that may or may not fit your desires are Winter’s Bone, Centurion, Excalibur, and anything that has Zatoichi in the title.

Fallen
Doom (fun, as long as you don’t expect it to be like the computer games)
Star Trek: Reboot
