My fiance has been having frequent nosebleeds in the last few months. Should I be worried?

Asked by kheredia (5571points) April 9th, 2011

We’ve been together a little over 4 years and I don’t remember him ever having these many nosebleeds in such a short period of time. Should he see a doctor? I’ve heard that nosebleeds occur a lot during the winter when the air is dry but it’s already spring and he’s still having nosebleeds. I’m starting to get worried about him but he doesn’t think it’s anything to worry about.

He could get his blood pressure checked. If that’s too high it can cause more frequent nose bleeds.

FYI, the most common cause for nose bleeds is called epistaxis: picking your nose.

I barely ever get them. But a few years ago I went to the ER for frequent ones. I got one a day. I got one while masturbating and one when I picked up a box. When I got one riding my bike I was worried and went to the ER.

It was aggressive nose clearing action. I stopped and I haven’t had one since.

I agree that he should get his blood pressure checked.

It’s likely nothing to worry about, but checking with a doctor certainly couldn’t hurt.

No, don’t worry – have him see a doctor and remove any doubt. Worrying will not solve anything.

It is spring which means allergy season… I’d get his blood pressure checked, nonetheless.

I was drinking lots of orange juice for a while – that gave me nosebleeds.

From a severe nosebleed, my ENT doctor recommended nasal flush, like Neil-Med (get over the counter at pharmacy) which uses a special saline packet. Also at night put a VERY SMALL amount of vaseline as a coating in each nostril. For several months no problems.

as mentioned high blood pressure is very important to rule out or treat first.
Beyond that dry heated winter air can definitely create problems including nosebleeds. Get a humidifier! And have it on continuously (fill that tank!) whenever your heat is on, never mind what time of year it is.
Allergies are another definite possibility. The only thing I’ve tried that worked for that is nasal irrigation, might not sound like it but it is very soothing and helps with hay fever too.

During a period of tremendous stress, I had about 3 nosebleeds a day for a while.. perhaps a week or so. It would just happen out of the blue. I’d be eating, and suddenly blood is dripping from my nose. Another time I was showering, and suddenly there was blood mixed in with the water..
I went to the doctor, and they said it could be just the dryness of the air, or the stress that I was going through as well. I received a nasal spray which kept the dryness away and eventually my nose bleeds were no more. It shouldn’t be too serious, but if it happens for a long time, he should get it checked.
