My baby keeps pulling at his bits hard everytime we take his nappy off, why?

Asked by BeccaBoo (2725points) April 10th, 2011

I have had this with him for the last 3 months, we have taken him to the GP who perscribed some anti-fungal cream. This did not work. i changed his nappy brand, this did not work. I have even taken to bathing him twice a day, this makes it worse. He sits there crushing his bits in the bath until he goes purple. Whats going on? Has anyone else had this with their babies? He is 13mnths old and is so persistant on grabbing them and crushing everything, until its red raw and bleeding.

You need to go back to the GP with this. Something is really bothering him and it needs to be discovered. Maybe a specialist needs to be called in.

Does the nappy have latex possibly? Does he try to rub himself even when the nappy is on, or only when he is naked?

Oh, maybe it is the bath? The soap?

You need to head back to the doctor and in the interim think about using cloth diapers with a lot of bare bum time.

FWIW, my children reacted badly to every disposable diaper out there. There was clearly something in the diaper that was agitating them. Cloth diapers were the only thing I could use that would alleviate the symptoms.

I think i will take him back again. To answer your question JLeslie he does it once his nappy is off, and in the bath and whenever he gets a chance to be naked. So am now reluctant to let him be, he does more damage once its off, although when its on he will scratch at his thighs.

@BeccaBoo It sounds as if he’s having a bad reaction to the diapers. I would avoid putting him in them at all costs. This comes from experience in dealing with my own children’s issues with diapers.

The cloth diapers don’t have to be expensive. If you get flat flannel sheets you can fold them and they have the added bonus of being much easier to clean.

You have to give the cloth diapers a try for a week and see if he recovers. At least then you can narrow it down, or start narrowing down.
