Who else is the government trying to kill?

Asked by josie (30934points) April 10th, 2011

A quote from Rep. Louise Slaughter (D., N.Y.)
“In 1994, people [Republicans] were elected simply to kill the National Endowment for the Arts,” said Slaughter yesterday. “Now they’re here to kill women.”

Some people on the far right think Democrats are here to kill babies and the elderly.

I look at my tax return and I feel like they are all trying to kill me!

But I figure if the government is trying to kill me, old folks,women and children, there must be others whom the government is trying to kill.
Who else is the government going to kill?
Is there anybody that the government is not going to kill?

So – depending on whether the Dems or Repubs are in, half of us better duck and run for cover!

Incorporate Your Uterus – once your uterus is a business it can do what it damn well pleases and no one will care less.

Kill immigrants?

JLeslie's avatar

Oh, and the public schools?

@Lightlyseared You made me cross my legs.

Small businesses?

JLeslie's avatar

Also, we could probably argue doctors. Maybe the medical insurance industry, and health care at large.

cockswain's avatar

They would also like to kill anyone Asian or less.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@cockswain what’s less than Asian supposed to mean?

cockswain's avatar

Just a joke. I once saw an Onion article about Sarah Palin’s demands while touring, and one of them was she mandated her children have a nanny of Asian or better.

JLeslie's avatar

@cockswain Please tell that is completely made up by an Onion writer.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@cockswain well that’s OK then.
@JLeslie who cares? It’s funny and it could be true. That’s good enough for me.

cockswain's avatar

@JLeslie Well, it was in print…

JLeslie's avatar

@cockswain Hahaha…so then it must be true. I have a hard time believing she said it. As much as I disagree with the woman, I have a hard time wrapping my mind around anyone saying such a thing. I prefer to stay in this place of hope.

cockswain's avatar

I really doubt she said it. It was in the Onion. I just loved the phrase “Asian or better.”

@Dr_Dredd

Some seem to fall into the “big business” category! : D

I cannot find any quote by Palin that says “Asian or better”. I suspect it was written by the Onion staff, especially since Palin famously doesn’t like asians.

cockswain's avatar

@filmfann I would say 99% of the Onion is completely made up. I also believe the Palin quote is made up too. It is just a joke.

I always find these types of arguments amusing. They are great for creating an emotional response and both politicians and the media love to use them. Rush Limbaugh had a great story I heard years ago. It goes something like this:

‘If god came down and said he was going to destroy the world tomorrow, the headlines would read “God Destroys World, Women and Minorities Hardest Hit”.

For some reason we think that if we don’t continue to hand out ‘free’ money to someone or some group, we are trying to kill them. If we expect them to stand on thier own merit, we are in some way disadvantaging them. By that same logic we could say that most parents try to kill their children when they become adults and no longer receive an allowance or substantial support from their parents. It makes for good press to get the juices flowing but has little real merit in trying to analyze the forces of good and evil.

Here’s the Onion infographic. I misquoted (misremembered?); it was “Korean ethnicity or higher.”

@josie I feel your pain. The Federal Government is not our friend. It actually hurts (“kill”s) those unfortunate people that it tries to help by keeping them dependent on the hand outs. Hey why work if Uncle Sugar will extend unemployment benefits forever? Meanwhile the hard working folks have to pay for it.

I have no sympathy for those who complain about how little they will be getting back in their Federal income tax return. They should consider themselves lucky to get anything back. I’ll have to pay an additional $15K to Obama above all the bi-weekly and quarterly taxes that I’m required to send in. We need a CPA to complete our >30 page long Federal taxes each year. Who am I? I’m just a medical professional (not a doctor) and my wife is a dietician. We are not rich thanks partially to the Federal Government.

My dream for my wife and I is simply save enough resources so that we can manage comfortably on our own in old age without any help from the government. However, way our U.S. Congress sits on perfumed pillows in their offices always dreaming up ways bleed us of our life energy (money) it seems my bank account will be gone before I. Then I too will start suckling on the government tit and start voting for Democrat candidates of course.

@filmfann

Say what? Where did you come by that bit of disinformation… that Sara Palin doesn’t like Asians?? Strange that this is the first time I’ve ever heard that!

cockswain's avatar

jesus christ.

CaptainHarley's avatar

@cockswain

I’ll assume that was for my benefit. Kindly allow me to elucidate. Since I am not a Republican, and have no intention of voting for any Republican or Democrat in the forseable future, I do not follow their statements, gaffes, or misadventures.

cockswain's avatar

Please read the thread and I think that will clarify things.

Palin also would like a 50-gallon aquarium containing a minimum of eight piranhas that haven’t been fed in a week and a bucket of ducks

filmfann's avatar

@CaptainHarley That little tidbit surfaced from her father while talking about why she quit college in Hawaii.

cockswain's avatar

Oops, my bad. Sorry, @CaptainHarley

From the piece by the New Yorker

In the New Yorker, Sam Tanenhaus has a new review of the book “Sarah from Alaska,” written by two reporters who covered Palin during the 2008 campaign, in which he flags a passage about how Asian-Americans reportedly made Palin uncomfortable while she was in college:

She is equally circumspect on the issue of ethnicity, pointing out that Todd, whom she met in high school, is “part Yupik Eskimo” and opened her to the “social diversity” of Alaska. (Wasilla is more than eighty per cent white.) Palin, though notoriously ill-travelled outside the United States, did journey far to the first of the four colleges she attended, in Hawaii. She and a friend who went with her lasted only one semester. “Hawaii was a little too perfect,” Palin writes. “Perpetual sunshine isn’t necessarily conducive to serious academics for eighteen-year-old Alaska girls.” Perhaps not. But Palin’s father, Chuck Heath, gave a different account to Conroy and Walshe. According to him, the presence of so many Asians and Pacific Islanders made her uncomfortable: “They were a minority type thing and it wasn’t glamorous, so she came home.” In any case, Palin reports that she much preferred her last stop, the University of Idaho, “because it was much like Alaska yet still ‘Outside.’”

CaptainHarley's avatar

Perhaps some of that accounts for her continuing drop in the polls.

cockswain's avatar

That, along with all the other dumb things she’s said. Maybe Donald Trump is the new Sarah Palin.

gmander's avatar

I would hope they are out to kill vampires, zombies and reptilian space aliens. And people that make TV programs about ‘celebrities’ and their lifestyles.

CaptainHarley's avatar

Vert few people are equipped to self-monitor all their utterances, and those are the very ones we trust least since they come across as being “too guarded.”

gondwanalon's avatar

@cockswain Whoever the Republican front runner is, John Stewart’s The Daily Show as well as Saterday Night Live are sure to destroy her/him. I think that Tina Fey single handedly killed Palin’s career.

cockswain's avatar

Maybe, but Palin did nothing to help herself by saying she can see Russia from her house, she reads “all” the magazines, and didn’t know any Supreme Court cases. I’m sure given about 15 minutes of interest and research, I can find plenty more of the gaffes than I’m currently recalling. And when she lost, she eventually started discussing Death Panels.

That woman was a huge mistake for the GOP. They could have picked Phil Davison and done no worse for their integrity and credibility.

And while much of the media will show a liberal bias, Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and the AM band of the radio tip the scales back towards at least even. In my opinion. George Bush won twice in a row.

JLeslie's avatar

@cockswain @gondwanalon The difference is SNL and Jon Stewart are basically comedy, one on Comedy Central, and the other a forever known funny show. Fox News, uses the word news which is misleading in my opinion. Things don’t quite balance out, because people on the extremes mostly listen to the people they tend to agree with. A balanced show would mean both sides here all sides.

CaptainHarley's avatar

Jon Stewart isn’t qualified to do anything but mock those better than him, which, by the way, includes most of the human race.

gmander's avatar

@CaptainHarley – “most of the human race”. Gosh, you’ve met a lot of people.

gondwanalon's avatar

@cockswain All candidates say dumb things. Of course liberal comedians and news are going to hammer about about the conservative bloopers relentlessly. Conservatives blow hards are going to lay their rhetoric on thick as well. Apparently whoever side pumps out the most slime wins.

Perhaps the saddest part in all of this is that so many people actually believe most of the crap that they are fed.

CaptainHarley's avatar

@gmander

Indeed! But I DID say “most,” just in case there are a few somewhere that I missed. : )

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@JLeslie Good point with respect to doctors.

@CaptainHarley It’s true that some small businesses take on the character of the larger ones, but I miss the mom-and-pop bookstores and coffeeshops.

CaptainHarley's avatar

@Dr_Dredd

Hah! It seems like that’s ALL we have here in our lil section of East Texas! : D

Demagogues like Slaughter are not taken seriously by thinking Americans.
This speaks volumes about the audience she wishes to address. ;)
