Anything that you could take for an acidic stomach besides Tums and milk?

I plan on seeing my doctor this week? I am hoping to get on something for what I think is a stomach ulcer. Is there anything over the counter that I could take that would be a bit stronger (than milk and Tums) in the meantime.

In the UK you can get omeprazole, pantoprazole and ranitidine from a pharmacist. All will help with stomach acid and gastic reflux.
Saltines and ginger ale helps me, but I don’t know if that is significant.I don’t know if you can get the same medications over the counter that we have in the States? Prilosec, for example.
I had an H. pylori infection in the past, which is the infection that causes ulcers. Afterward I went through a phase where I had heartburn frequently. I tried the apple cider vinegar every day, and honestly it went away. It is extremely rare for me to get heartburn now. I don’t know that it works for everyone, but it worked wonders for me, personally.
Peppermint tea or ginger tea.
I don’t know about the regs in your country, but just ask a pharmacist. Also, milk aggravates my stomach when I have excess acidity. Sometimes I drink a lot of plain water and it helps. In a pinch, I’ve mixed baking soda and water and drank that. Tastes like crap but it works.
If your indigestion is caused by GERDS, peppermint tea will exacerbate the symptoms.
Indigestion
“Peppermint calms the muscles of the stomach and improves the flow of bile, which the body uses to digest fats. As a result, food passes through the stomach more quickly. However, if your symptoms of indigestion are related to a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, peppermint should not be used.”
Have you checked the dietary changes that might help alleviate or remove symptoms?
There is also the issue of when you eat and when you lie down. See charts and suggestions
Common culprits are acidic and citrus fruits and tomatoes, chocolate, hot peppers,
Prilosec (omeprazole) is good, so is ginger tea. Stop eating tomatoes, citruses, anything acidic – basically go on the BRAT diet until you can see your doctor.
Which means, chill out with the red wine. I had some Malbec last night, and my poor stomach was a burning pit of fire.
Alcohol does not go well with stomach acidity. It stimulates the stomach to produce more.
Milk causes acid to secrete from the stomach. @Jude, try eating smaller meals more frequently. I agree with the BRAT diet also. If it were me, I’d spend one day eating mostly brown rice or quinoa to allow my digestive system to be at ease.
@Jude There’s always white wine ;)
White wine is generally more acidic than red.
If you are constipated, cure that and the stomach discomforstshould subside. If you think it is an ulcer, you should be tested for h.pylori. In the meantime if the pain is very uncomfortable you can take a teaspoon of liquid chloreseptic and get topical relief.
Oh, no dark teas or coffee, the tannic acid In tea can be irritating.
No one has mentioned it, so here goes….............
A teaspoon of yellow mustard is an old, but effective remedy.
Omeprazole and other OTC remedies can be had. Also, my grandma used to give me baking soda: a quarter or half teaspoon stirred into water. Tastes horrible, but it works.
Yeah, you can dissolve baking soda in some water and drink it, or take an alka seltzer. By the way prilosec you need to take before a meal. It doesn’t really work after the fact.
Ranitidine, we can get it OTC. Get the 150 mg. The baking soda works but isn’t recommended, better to buy some soda water. This is personal experience, ranitidine saved me before I got a Losec prescription.
Pepcid Complete from Johnson and johnson works GREAT !
And over the counter.
@JLeslie you can take omeprazole any time you want. It is more effective if taken on an emtpy stomach as it is slightyl better abosrbed but it is still effective if takne with food. Further alot of newer formulations are designed to be just as effective whenever they’re taken
