What would cause coarse, dark, long chest hair on a woman with no other masculine characteristics?

Asked by silverlining (78points) April 10th, 2011

I know a girl who is otherwise very feminine, in her voice and build, but has 30 or so long, wiry black hairs between her breasts. My own search led me to hirsutism. She has acne, which is another symptom, but no other masculine traits. Could it be mild hirsutism?

That’s something for a doctor to decide.

I bet you want us to try to answer you, but it really is best to ask a doctor. Try to get one who will do more than just tell the woman not to worry about it, as a woman with the right hormone balance shouldn’t have the type of chest hair you describe.

If it’s just those few, and she’s really bugged by them, she can just shave them off.

I’m no Dr. but Look at this. I’ve had PCOS for a long time and suffer from most of the side effects, when you mentioned chest hair it’s what popped into my mind.

Interesting, well I was just curious. Some people here are doctors.

@JustJessica I did see info about PCOS. I originally thought she might have an excess of testosterone but the hormone fluctuation involved with PCOS makes sense, because her symptoms are more subtle. Also, she hates kids/doesn’t want to have kids; I wonder if it’s partly because she has this condition. Hmm.

@silverlining Probably not – I don’t think levels of testosterone have anything to do with wanting kids.

@MyNewtBoobs That’s not what I meant. PCOS causes infertility.

it’s very common. She can go to the local hindu spa and have them threaded off, they will grow back finer, lighter, and less and less. Lots of young women have this- not unusual at all except maybe embarrassing
