Ebay question (details inside)?

I purchased a vintage lighted sign off of Ebay. The seller sent it Standard Shipping with USPS. I was told that it would take 3–7 days. It has been 9 days, and nothing.
He also gave me a tracking number. The item (according to the tracking number) has been in Philly since April 3rd. Nothing to report after that. It was received on April 2.
The seller insured the item for 200 bills.
This is the last email that he sent to me:
It was entered into the mail on Saturday 4/2. I am told I need to wait 14 days before an insurance claim can be placed. I am at a loss why the last tracking information was Warrendale, PA and nothing since.
My question, how on earth could something like this (a rather large, fragile light up sign) get lost in the mail? I really bummed as I wanted this item.

I’m not sure how it could get lost, but it’s definitely possible. I once had a box get lost for almost 3 months. Have you tried to call the USPS with the tracking number to see what they say?
Call USPS, @Jude and see if they have more up to date tracking than what ebay is showing. Ebay’s tracking is often not updated until the item is delivered.
Here’s my best advice, if you really want/like an item, PAY for priority. So far in my vast online shopping, I have never lost anything sent to me or from me via priority.
I often ask a seller before I purchase items if they will send priority. If they say no, I’ll ask about UPS…if no, I will buy elsewhere.
@Jude They do not always update until it is delivered. That could be why you are seeing it “stuck” in one place. I have an ebay store, and have been through this a multitude of times
So, just wait and see? For how long before the seller puts in an insurance claim?
I filled out something through USPS (they’re not open today), requesting a response back about the item via phone. I am supposed to be reached within the next 3 business days. Here’s hoping that they can tell me what it is.
Sometimes, the item might be stuck in a certain post office. I think I once sent an item that my local post office somehow skipped over until I called them about it.
Looking at USPS transit times (the link is at the bottom, goofy formatting), I don’t see a 3–7 days estimate for anything, but some are 2–9 days which makes sense that they’d wait a few extra days (to 14) to accept a claim. You’re also spanning two Sundays (non-delivery days).
USPS doesn’t do tracking like UPS or FedEx, they simply record received and delivered. It’s not tracking, it’s “delivery confirmation” and it usually doesn’t change until the night after the package is delivered. (if you get it tomorrow, the status will probably update tomorrow night)
How on earth could something like this (a rather large, fragile light up sign) get lost in the mail?
Because it’s so unusual, large packages are usually set off to the side at post offices and sometimes you end up having to retrieve it from your area station. From being in the same situation on both sides I suspect, depending on your mail route, there may just not be room in the normal carrier’s delivery vehicle for “a lot” of these packages. They probably take what they can each day.
Basically all these reasons are why UPS and FedEx are still in business and are able to charge a premium over USPS.
USPS is set up to deliver mail first and packages second, UPS and FedEx are set up to deliver packages and treat everything like a package.

Thanks for your help. I will keep you all posted!
I had this happen to me too. It was a large, framed O’Keefe print that somehow came off the truck in Dallas and never left there. An employee missed it with the scanner and it didn’t make its connection until 10 days later when that office does a re-scan of unclaimed packages
The seller might have gotten confused and sent the item to the address of a buyer of something else. (This happened to us.) Stay in touch with the seller to let him/her know the status. It is their responsibility to ensure that you receive it.
I also had something like this happen- the seller put the wrong zip code on the package, the PO didn’t figure it out, and the package went from San Diego to Phoenix, AZ before it was eventually shipped back to the seller1
She was sent out for delivery at 11, today! It was sent to my g/f’s in Michigan and she will get it when she gets home.
Yay!
That’s great! Glad you got it figured out!
Unfortunately, the item got severely damaged during shipping. Thank-God there was insurance on it and a 7 day money back guarantee. Back she goes!
That stinks! Good thing there was insurance. Hopefully things will go better next time around.
That is such a pisser. Sorry to hear that. I hope it wasn’t a one-of-a-kind item for your sake and the seller’s.
