What kind of flower is this?

Here’s a picture:

It looks somewhat familiar and it has distinctive leaves, but my google-fu is weak in this case.

http://www.mywildflowers.com/ is a really good database search engine.

Its leaves look like geranium leaves. How does it smell? Like dirt?

Looks like geranium. The odor of the stems and leaves is like nothing else and difficult to describe, but would take the mystery out of it. The leaves actually look a bit small, and it is quite lanky (but healthy looking) for a geranium. The flowers are a common geranium color.

Yeah, definitely some kind of geranium.

@phaedryx rub the leaves they may have a scent to them as well, Geraniums can be scented (such as having a apple or a rose scent to them) See the link that @thenemo1 provided you, I was going to give you a similar link but everything I was going to give you is in the link that they already gave you. But rubbing the leaves then smelling your fingers will help you tell if its a scented geranium or not.

Absolutely, unquestionably an ivy geranium. If large enough, the leaves will hang down like ivy so it is pretty in a hanging basket.

You can nip off a few small leaves with some stem attached (use a thin, light green one) and root it in a small pot with average soil. I have one in my living room now, ready to bloom for the first time since last fall.
