Why don't more people roll their windows down when it is warm?

Asked by Blackberry (34189points) April 11th, 2011

Here in New Jersey, it’s finally warm. We all have cabin fever so one would expect everyone to revel in the sunlight and feel the natural air. I drive with all of my windows down unless it’s really hot, but the A/C is always a last resort. Could you tell me why some people drive with all the windows up when it’s 70–80 degrees with low humidity?

I don’t get it either. As soon as the warmer weather hit, mine were down! Fresh air, aahhhhhhh. :)

Maybe it’s that little known phenomena, donaldtrumpitis. In laymens terms….a morbid fear of ones hair being drastically altered due to a prevailing wind. It’s one theory anyhow.

Blackberry's avatar

@ucme Oh yeah, I didn’t think of that. Sometimes when a woman is in my car, she won’t let me roll down the windows .

1, Road noise.

2. They don’t to muss their hair.

I’m a fresh air junkie too, always have my car windows down when the temps are moderate.
Same goes for my house, I NEED light and air.

I don’t know how some people can STAND living in a dark, closed up house! Jeez…why not just hermetically seal up every crack and buy those 40 lb., triple lined, cave dwelling dark curtains! lol

If you’re on the highway with 100,000 vehicles, though, just how fresh is that air outside? :P

ucme's avatar

@Blackberry Not an issue for me, the wife loves the wind in her hair.

@erichw1504 Otherwise known as ripthearseoffamonkey, terrible affliction. Poor monkey….. man!

I think it’s because we’re spoiled with standard A/C in most cars. It’s nice to not get all icky-sticky sweaty and just blast it on.

To think of how people survived before air conditioning… the horror! :O

They are worried about their wig blowing off. ;)

For the same reason that they’re wearing heavy down parkas in downtown Toronto right now when it’s 20C/68F. Because they’re nuts!

I always drive with the windows down unless a big rig is passing by me (because they are so goddamn loud) or unless it’s extremely cold.

It’s allergy season.

mrentropy's avatar

I can’t answer this because I routinely have my windows down and my sun roof open.
Which didn’t stop me one bit from answering.

Too noisy. I can’t listen to NPR.

They are listening to Rush Limbaugh on the radio.

Well, if on the highway (I believe it’s any speed over 45 mph) it is more economical to have the AC on and the windows up (less air resistance). That being said, if the day is fine, and I’ve got some good music on the radio, I cannot resist driving down the highway with the radio blasting and the wind in my hair…

For me, if I do more than crack the drivers window about an inch, my car gets a bit shaky at highway speeds due to aerodynamics. My car is a brick that weighs about ¼ ton less than most cars. Opening two or more windows at >40 mph makes my car hard to handle.
In town though, I have no such problems so I can’t explain it unless people are using their A/C.

Pig farms. Have you ever been driving past one in the summer? Holy mother of god, they stink. There’s one a few miles from my house and on a bad day it smells a mile away.

Once it gets too hot, it’s no longer nice. Plus, I have long hair, so if it blows about, it obscures my visibility and I spend all my time trying to make sure my hair is back so I can see instead of focusing on the road. And if I’m trying to listen to something, I have to turn it up loud so I can hear it, which is then loud enough to force others to hear it, and they really shouldn’t have to hear what I’m listening to. So I do, but not always, and usually not on the freeway.

I actually get better gas mileage when I run the AC and leave the windows closed. The increased turbulence caused by the open windows can boost my fuel consumption 10% a month.

I love the fact that my roof comes off ad I can feel the wind in my hair… love fresh air!!

Allergies suck, man!

To me, when it’s hot and I’m on the highway doing 70+ mph, it’s not pleasant having hot air flying into the car and the wind noise is very loud. I also don’t want to arrive at work looking crazed with my hair blown all over.

When I was about 12, I was in a car and the driver had the windows down, and a bee flew in and landed on my arm and stung me. After that I’m kind of not into having windows down, regardless.

zenvelo's avatar

Ha! Reminds me of my senior year of high school driving on cold but clear days, 80 mph, windows down and heater blasting full!

aprilsimnel's avatar

Oh yeah, bugs!

You ever try to get a bee out of your car while driving? Huh? Have ya’? Huh?

Blackberry's avatar

@aprilsimnel Yeah, it’s pretty difficult. Thanks for the answers; I totally forgot about allergies, and I don’t roll my windows down on the highway either.

yankeetooter's avatar

@aprilsimnel Bees have a hard time getting in your car when you’re going 70 mph, lol!

@jca I only do such craziness in the spring and fall. Once that summer humidity hits, you can just forget about it…

A hornet once flew in my car window. I’m terrified of stingy bugs. It freaked me out so much that I ended up crashing into the garage door at my parents’ house. The whole thing (except the motor) had to be replaced.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

I live in metropolis where there is always noise, dust and other car’s exhaust so I keep my windows up and clean air filters replaced often. Fresh air is a luxury for when we drive into some little mountain town where we can cruise around under 30mph.

Because fossil fuels and electricity are still far too cheap and a lot of people have the illusion that overusing our atmosphere is a free lunch. It isn’t.
