If you were accepted to a university under a specific major, can you change your major the first semester you start going there?

I was planning on double majoring but now I think I’m just going to do one major. When I filled out my application I applied as a music major but now I want to change it to English. Can I do that?

Yes, if no scholarship involved.
In addition to scholarship issues, it could also depend if you could get into the English program if it had separate admission requirements. Some programs have their own admission requirements in addition to the college’s requirements. Talk to a counselor at the college as soon as possible.
Yeah, I guess I should talk to a counselor. I’ll make an appointment. I hope it’s not too much of a hassle.
You’ve got to get gen ed requirements out of the way the first two years with most programs. I believe I read somewhere that 84% of all college students change their majors at least once.
@BarnacleBill I already did most of my gen. ed. at a community college. I’m going in as a transfer student but I was just wondering because when I filled out my application I applied as a music major, so I’m not sure if I have do wait a semester to change it or if I can do it right away.
You will need to apply for admission to the new program ASAP, and have your transcripts re-evaluated for that program. If you haven’t started taking classes yet, it should not be a problem as long as there’s room in the program. If not, you may end up taking classes and having to wait for admission to the department, which could mean that you won’t be able to register for some of the upper level classes.
why bother? not being sarcastic, wait another semester or so and figure out if that’s a more solid decision than your first—unless you are sure and there are some classes you just can’t take unless you’re an English major…
