Do artifical sweetners, like Equal, have an expiration date?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) April 12th, 2011

I found some old packs of Sweet and Low that must be at least three years old. The contents of each packet is hard. I searched, but could not find an expiration date. Question: are the contents of each packet still safe to consume?

I could not find anything on Sweet and Low except that it should have an expiration date on the box (not individual packages.) Here is info on Equal. Based on the contents being hard and the equal info, I would not use it.

Optimistic, I read that article on Equal. So, it appears that artifical sweetners have an indefinite shelf life, as long as they are stored in a cool, dry place.

I am going to take your advice and trash it. It’s not that expensive and why take the chance? right?

I would think that you could use the Sweet N Low. I do not use Equal because of the mental dangers it poses.

@john65pennington I agree. Even if it only makes you feel a little icky, the small price isn’t worth it. I am guessing it also might not have been stored away from heat and humidity due to the fact it hardened.
