What do you think of this TED talk?

Asked by cazzie (24516points) April 12th, 2011

This TED talk is about what the speaker thinks apathy really is. Do you agree or disagree? (It’s Canadian, so the ‘Charitable Status’ regulation they have there doesn’t apply in the US)

Are there truly systemic changes we can make? Should we?

I can’t watch it right now, can you paraphrase?

Certainly there are changes to be made. I have worked diligently at the local level, and it appears to be changing. I came to my local village with an issue…and while stating my case against the issue, I brought up all of the reasons it was nearly impossible to find our village info/laws unless a lawyer was involved. Luckily there were a lot of volunteers willing to assist me…some of them with legal backgrounds

Since my stance on said issue, our village website has had two overhauls to create ease of user-ship and to encourage residential involvement. One of our local trustees now regularly sends out emails to encourage participation and transparency.

It can be done but as citizens it means becoming involved now to help encourage this change.

EDIT: I started this about 3yrs ago here. It’s still a work in progress, but it is a move in the right direction.

I enjoyed this. Thanks for posting it.
The ideas he puts forth are to the point, and could easily be done. Regarding the public notices, I think he is spot on about City Hall NOT wanting people to get involved.

@filmfann I agree. Just like my MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) really didn’t want to help me when I needed her help the most.

It’s all smoke and mirrors.

I’m a very politically active person and I’m am slowly becoming very cynical. I laughed out loud at this phrase: Don’t vote! It only encourages them. Whoever came up with that knows exactly how I am feeling.
