Is the frenulum often removed in circumcisions?

Asked by Drewseph (533points) April 12th, 2011

Do they only really keep it if you ask for it, or are getting it done as an adult? This, oddly, is stressing me out. I’m afraid that my male peers may have a frenulum and that they may get more out of masturbation/sex. I don’t even know if they do, though. That’s just a fear. Also, is it usually partially or fully removed in circumcisions? Does it honestly make a difference in sensitivity or pleasure? Am I missing out? I don’t even know if I have one. I was circumcised as a baby at a hospital. I don’t have any sort of line that sticks out on my penis, so I am really puzzled… I don’t know why, but this has been worrying me for a while now. I have anxiety, and at first I wondered if my male peers were circumcised, and they said they were, but now I’m worrying about this little detail. I’m a perfectionist. If I was straight, I wouldn’t really care, but I may be bisexual, and the thought of getting it on with a guy who isn’t the “same” as me seems awkward…

I think you mean a foreskin, and yes that is what is removed in circumcisions. A frenulum is the membrane under a tongue.

And you what you really need to do is relax.

@Rarebear Penile tissue: The word frenulum on its own is often used for the frenulum of prepuce of penis or frenulum preputii penis, which is an elastic band of tissue under the glans penis that connects to the prepuce, or foreskin to the vernal mucosa, and helps contract the prepuce over the glans. @Pied_Pfeffer Oops! You’re right. I’ve done hundreds of circumcisions and I’ve never heard that piece of tissue referred to that way. My bad.

When you do your circumcisions, do you often remove the frenulum? I don’t really understand the process…

Well, yeah, but I’m asking about the frenulum. Are you sure you are certified for doing circumcisions?..

@Drewseph You’re right. I’m just making this whole thing up. Sorry to have answered.

Elastic band of tissue under the glans penis. No cutting that off. They just quickly nip off skin. @Rarebear is a physician, a little smarter than you’re average bear.

@Drewseph This is what most people think of when it comes to the word “frenulum”, so that’s why @Rarebear answered the way he did. In fact, when I first read your question I thought, “What does the tongue have to do with circumcision?” And @Rarebear is right that it’s the foreskin that is removed.

“The frenulum may be cut when a male is circumcised… The frenulum was reported to be cut in 26.7%, 20%, and 33.33% of circumcised patients in various surveys.[1][2]” Source
