How far would you be willing to walk one-way if you did not have to?
Often to pay a bill or pick up a few items I could easily carry I will walk up to just over a half of a mile, if the distance is slightly longer sometimes I would hop on a bus. A lot of people I know would not do that and they are well able to walk, they are disabled or have trouble walking. If they have to walk that distance it because there is no other choice like getting to BART after 7am where if they find parking they will have to walk about a quarter mile to get to the train or at some event where they have to walk that distance to get to the seats. When people take their kids to the amusement park they probably walk more but don’t realize it. How far away in mile would you venture without your car from your home or job?

I walk from my house in to the city from time to time just for the fun of it. I guessed it was about four miles, until the first time took a lot longer than I thought it would. Turned out it’s six miles, but I still enjoy the walk. Other than all the garbage dumbasses throw out of their cars.
Oh i’m like the guy fron kung fu, I basically walk the earth. Sure driving’s more convenient but a good walk never harmed anyone.
I’m okay with walking 10 miles as long as time isn’t a factor.
I walk all the time just for the sheer enjoyment of it. Now that the weather is nice I will jog to the health club…kinda silly not to!
I live 1.1 miles from work. I would walk it (or ride a bike) if.. ; 1) I didn’t wake up so incredibly late and close to start time that even driving I’m a few minutes late. 2) There wasn’t a highway overpass with no sidewalks along the path. 3) If the weather was a bit more consistent/not crappy (its ok right now, but 8 months out of the year its awful).
I’ll bike just about anywhere. Unfortunately, right now, even though I like only about 5 miles from work, biking’s impossible because there’s a 400 foot elevation change (and all the climbing would be on the way home!) and several very dangerous freeway onramps and offramps with no provisions for bikes at all. :>(
On the other hand, the nearest store is 1.3 miles away- a nice walk- and it’s only about 3 miles by bike to some other stores.
Usually about 10–20 blocks, I’m not sure what that translates to in miles. That’s only if I don’t have anywhere to be. If I’m on my way to work, I like to sleep in until the very last moment possible, then I eat breakfast in the car while I’m driving there. I’m so not a morning person, so I’m not going to get up early for a nice leisurely walk to work. My last job was about 10 blocks from the metro and I used to walk there all the time on my way home. Usually any time I have to take a bus around that distance, I just skip it and walk.
A couple of miles in a sunny or overcast day.
I walk about 4 miles a day as it is and could do alot more,I’m sure.
I do not walk much here. Mainly because there are no sidewalks and the roads are narrow. Walking involves me pushing a stroller and the lack of sidewalks make me nervous as people use our streets as a way to get off of the backed up main road. I do not have a distance I will or won’t walk. We used to do volksmarches a lot when I was a teenager.
Pretty far. A few miles. I like walking and hiking. Our grocery store is only a couple of blocks away. As long as it’s not raining/icy out, I’ll walk there or to the post office.
Probably like a quarter mile. I get out of breath easily. And no, I’m not a lard ass, I’ve always been like this, even when I was an athlete.
Oh, man. We talk about this a lot. When I visit family in the US they are amazed that I’m willing to walk to the store when they wouldn’t think if it and get in their cars. I have a shopping centre that is 20 minutes straight uphill from where I live. It’s not a paved road or a sidewalk. It’s 10 minutes of muddy shortcuts straight up the subdivision and then through a block of woods and a farmers field. My other option is a small village 4km with a dedicated walkway/bike path. I make both trips, on foot, regularly, regardless of the weather. We have a saying here in Norway. ‘Ikke dårlige været, bare dårlige klær.’ (loosely translated… ‘No such thing as bad weather, only bad dressing for the weather.’
I have no idea in miles/kilometres/whatever. But I really don’t mind walking anywhere unless it’s raining/freezing/sweltering and I don’t have too much to carry. Living downtown in a huge city will do that to you.
I could easily walk the 3 miles into town if I had a safe road to walk on. The state route we live on is very busy and not safe to walk. There are no sidewalks, just farmland.
Now put me in a state park or some other hiking destination and I could walk all day!
Where I live? Nowhere if I don’t have to in the Spring or Summer months. In the Winter months then I have no problem walking a mile if it’s in a protected neighborhood.
Depends on the weather and depends where I am. I walk about 2 miles with neighbors 3 times a week just around the neigborhood.
I can’t really walk to any shopping where I live, but if I drive to a shopping area, I will walk about half a mile or so each way. There is a major shopping area with a mall, and across the street Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, Target, and others, and I am know to just park one place and walk to the others, winds up being a lot of walking. Not to mention if I have shopping to do in the mall, that can be another ½ mile to mile.
When I lived in an apartment for a short time in FL I almost always walked to the grocery store about a quarter mile each way. One vening my husband came home and asked where my car was. I said, “outside.” He said, “no it’s not.” He has had his car stolen before, and so have many people we know (it happens a lot in FL) so he is always paranoid. We walked outside, and indeed I did not see my car. He was freaking, pacing, babbling. I kept telling him to let me think. Then it dawned on me, I had run an errand and then driven over to the supermarket on the way home. When I walked out of the market I just walked right home, like I typically do, and left the car at the store. He stayed pissed at me for a while. No sense of humor for these things.
When I am in NYC I walk a lot. Easily 5 miles a day. Sometimes I could take a bus to get over to the subway, but decide to walk to the subway, or just walk in general.
Personally, I take great enjoyment in walking, for it really eases my mind and gives me a lot of time to ponder things on my own. It’s actually insanely disappointing that I can’t walk as much as I could because in the suburbia I live in there aren’t any satisfying wooded areas or a city..:\
It depends on the weather, and whether I have a limited amount of time to get to where I’m going. I will often walk 2 miles out of my commute home instead of taking the bus, but I wouldn’t do it in the dark, in the rain, or if I was in a hurry (I wouldn’t walk 2 miles there for instance – I would rather get up half an hour later and catch the bus). I also wouldn’t walk that far with shopping – I often walk to the supermarket (1.5 miles) but get the bus home.
On a nice day with no baggage and no rush, I would say 2 to 2.5 miles is my limit.
