Like what city are you most afraid of going to? The one that isn’t actually a city…

Well Bogota, Columbia is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Here’s a link that might help.

In addition to the cities already mentioned, it seems that Tripoli, Libya would now be dangerous.

I remember reading that St. Louis has the highest rape rate in america. Cleveland seems to be pretty bad, too. @KatetheGreat I hear colombia is bad—my friend went there and said it was very dangerous…and lots and lots of drugs…

Baghdad or Mogudishu.

@dxs Yes, Colombia is REALLY bad. It’s one of the scariest places.

So far these answers make South East L.A. seem tame…

I live near Memphis, it is pretty bad.

Detroit.

I’ve been to Bogata. Really nice people. But, indeed you do have to worry about being kidnapped.

Rio de Janiero

St. Louis does rank pretty high in violent crime, true.

New Orleans

Southeast DC

Mexico City

Riviera Beach, FL, and parts if Miami of course.

Caracas

Monterrey, MX

All these cities have their really bad pockets and ok spots. Stay on the beaten path.

I just got off the phone with my SIL who is from Bogata, Colombia. Both she and my brother were surprised to hear that the city is still in the top ten of most dangerous places. They said that the government has put a lot of effort into addressing the crime problems and that it has gotten much better in the past five years. Her mother and several siblings still live in Bogata, and they’ve never felt unsafe.

Like @JLeslie said, it’s a matter of learning what areas are not safe and stay away from them. (And girlfriend, I’m with you on the mention of Memphis. It’s a banner day here if there is not a report of a shooting, robbery or rape in the news.)

@Pied_Pfeffer Tell them to go the Catedral de Sal outside of Bogata. Catholic churches are always full of gold, but this church was far from gold, built in a mountain, it was fascinating to me. Everything carved from stone. The baptismal font (sp?) uses water from beneath the earth right there inside the mountain, I loved how it felt close to nature.

New York City

Some guy got hit in the back of the head by a screwdriver and robbed.

Baghdad. Would never ever go anywhere near it. After that, Mogadishu. Not at all safe. I also remember feeling very unsafe in Johannesburg and some parts of Cape Town.

@weeveeship NYC rarely makes the top 10 for dangerous cities in the US, not even top 20. You may fear it, but realistically, relatively, it’s pretty safe.

Brian1946's avatar

I almost forgot about Monstraw City! ;-o

weeveeship's avatar

@JLeslie Depends on what part of NYC. The thing is, NYC is so large that certain areas can be very dangerous while other areas can be relatively safe. It all evens out in the end for the rankings.

@weeveeship Like every big city, stay on the beaten path like I said. Especially Manhattan feels very safe, areas are very popuated, crime is statisically “low.” The Bronx may be a different story, but tourists aren’t in the Bronx much. The great thing about NYC is you can walk for blocks and blocks and blocks, and it is busy streets. In Memphis you get about 6 blocks in each direction, and then you are in an area with few people, with a few sketchy characters hanging out. Worse on Sunday when the streets are desolate. Not sure if that is church or people sleeping off the partying? I lived in downtown Memphis for a short time, and on a Sunday I felt like if I was murdered in broad daylight on the street, no one would know for hours.
